Should women have the right to undergo an abortion? Throughout history women have had it difficult in a world mostly run by men. Overtime women have shown that they’re very much as equal and just as capable to do things. However, abortion is a very sensitive and controversial topic concerning women today. In proper terms, abortion is the expulsion of a fetus from the uterus before it has reached the stage of viability. In other words, it’s the termination of pregnancy usually within the first 28 weeks. A landmark supreme court case known as Roe v. Wade, a decision where the court ruled that the constitution of the United States protects a pregnant women’s liberty to choose to have an abortion with limited government restriction. This was such a huge milestone in women’s rights and guaranteed protection from the U.S. government. Furthermore, there are still things that can jeopardize women to this constitutional right. These things can include cultural, religious, and political beliefs. As of now there are a lot of states that try to overturn this case.

Abortion in America has been split into two different groups, they are the “pro-lifers” and the “pro-choice”. It is obvious what the difference between both are, one is against abortion and the other is for. When it comes to these groups, I wanted to have a better insight on why they chose to believe what they believe. In a news article published by YES! Magazine they showed a map that shows which states were very supportive and very hostile. To my conclusion it seems that middle America was the most hostile and included states that were mostly conservative. States like Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, north and south Dakota were the most hostile. Now I’m not saying they are wrong to have that belief, but it isn’t ironic that states with most hostility are Republican. In “About six-in-ten Americans say abortion should be legal in all or most cases” an article written by Hannah Hartig and published by Pew research states that 61% of republicans in office are not in favor for abortion. With that being said, it isn’t just conservative beliefs, there’s still about 39% of U.S. adults think abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.

Religion is a big factor when it comes to abortion. One of the most anti-abortion religious groups is the Roman Catholic church. They have held the most absolute and extreme position against abortion than any other religious group. Since January 22nd, 1973, the U.S. catholic Bishops have been opposing it, that’s roughly around 40 years. In “Religion and Abortion: Roman Catholicism lost in the pelvic zone” an article Writing by Frances Kissling, it emphasizes how the U.S.C.C (United States Catholic Conference), a committee made up of all men, decide what is in the best interest for a woman. Having no say or no opportunity to voice their beliefs is unfair, but along with women there are roughly about 53 million Catholics that aren’t being heard at these conferences. There is an estimate of 70,412,021 registered Catholics in the United States of America. Another religion that is mostly against abortion is Hinduism. The Hindu way is to choose the action that will do least harm to all involved. As stated in Abortion, an article written by BBC says, “Classical Hindu texts are strongly opposed to abortion” they compare it to many things. One text compares abortion to the killing of a priest, another text considers abortion a worse sin than killing one’s parents and finally some texts say that a woman who aborts her child will lose her caste. That doesn’t mean that all Hindu’s believe that but that’s what was thought and considered beliefs and tradition.

In the political world Abortion has always been a topic of interest in most debates. With democrats mostly being known for pro-choice and republicans mostly being known for pro-life it has sparked such a divide in both groups. Most conservative states want the removal of planned parenthood because they don’t want to use taxpayer money for clinics and want to overturn of Roe v. Wade. In “Human Rights and Abortion”, written by Anu Kumar, she goes on to state that everyone has the right to make informed decisions about their body and health. Also adding how strict abortion laws put in place by some republican states violate women’s right to life, health, equality, privacy and to live free from discrimination. Democrat’s views on abortion are about 80% legal in all or most cases because most democrats believe that woman should have the right to choose because taking that away would be violating human rights and equality as stated in “Public Opinion on Abortion” written by Carrie Blazina.

However, the opposing side, the so called “pro-lifers” have convincing evidence on why abortion should be a crime. An article written and published by BBC named, “Arguments against Abortion”, has stated quite a lot of arguments that oppose abortion. As stated in the article, “Some join other pro-life advocates and say that the right to life should always outweigh the right of an individual to quality or control of their own body.” Furthermore, some other arguments include like how abortion sidesteps oppression of women, abortion damages women, abortion violates feminist principles and how abortion is a male plot. To explain in depth the arguments made I will breakdown each argument and what they mean. When the author says, “abortion damages women”, he simply means that abortion can cause long-term physical and emotional health of women who have an abortion. In the article, the author continues by saying “abortion violates feminist principles”, to simply put it, they mean that “…some feminists oppose all forms of violence, including abortion, because they are inconsistent with the core feminist principles of justice, non-violence and non-discrimination.” While it might be true that some people believe abortion is murder and life start at contraception, it is all based on belief. On the other hand, others attribute personhood or life once the physical appearance of a fetus resembles the mature human form which is noticeable at around 9 weeks.

Women have had a difficult time in a world dominated by men throughout history. Women have gradually demonstrated that they are just as equal to men and just as capable of accomplishing goals. Abortion, on the other hand, is a very sensitive and contentious topic among society today. An abortion is defined as the removal of a fetus from the uterus before it reaches the viability stage. In other words, it's when a pregnancy is terminated within the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Abortion was set in stone in a lawsuit named Roe v. Wade that was a 7-2 decision in which the due process clause of the fourteenth amendment provides the “right to privacy”. This was a landmark Supreme Court decision in which the court ruled that the constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman's right to choose whether to have an abortion with limited government restrictions. This was a watershed moment for women's rights, as it ensured that they would be protected by the US government. In addition, there are still issues that could jeopardize this constitutional right such as culture, religion, and political beliefs and there are currently several states are attempting to overturn this decision. To the larger world, think about what it means to have this right stripped away, it can lead to many issues and makes you wonder who really is in power. So that brings up the question, should woman be legally allowed to have abortions?
