Slammed by Colleen Hoover is the emotional love story between Layken Cohen, a eighteen year old girl who just lost her dad and is expected to move to a new state at the end of her senior year. She is being forced to move from Texas based on the fact her mother says she can not afford the house. Layken aka Lake is absolutely pissed about this situation. She is appalled at the fact she has to move only 6 months after her dad's unexpected passing by a heart attack. Her brother Kel is only 9 and does not have as many issues with moving considering he is so young. So Lake and her family move to Michigan where she runs into Will and Caulder, the brother duo that are her neighbors who have also gone through a lot. Will Cooper is a poetry loving twenty one year old teacher. Who is newly forced to be a dad having to take care of his 9 year old younger brother Caulder, due to his parents dying in a car crash.

Will and Lake meet immediately the second she pulls up in her moving truck. Her brother Kel and Will´s brother Caulder immediately start playing and she joins them hoping to make Kel happy. Then she ends up running into Will, the attraction is immediate between them and they shortly become quick friends with having to see each other's younger siblings all the time as well as going grocery shopping together. This leads to Will asking Lake on a date, where they go to a slam poetry club for the night and he performs a piece and Lake is absolutely smitten with Will. They end up kissing each other at the end of the date, both of them excited about their future. But Will is going away for the weekend and won't be back until Lake's first day of school. Lake and Will bump into each other at her highschool…that he teaches at. Each of them are really surprised and upset because it was never brought up. She was a senior and he was a teacher at 21. They immediately stop seeing each other but their attraction is too great to just let it go and they end up in some compromisable situations. But everything gets more complicated when she finds out her mother has cancer and is gonna die and she will have to take care of Kel. This causes stress for everyone but they still figure out their differences.

The subject of this book was about forbidden love and self restraint. My inquiry project is about love and how certain people or situations can affect everyone's love life differently. This book has a lot of hardships between Lake and Will because they are obviously both immediately obsessed with each other but then are ripped apart because of him being her teacher. Since this was unintentional from both parties and neither even considered this as an outcome it caused a lot of tension. Furthermore, Will thought Lake lied to him and was doing this on purpose to ruin his life with Caulder. I feel the characters were as honest as possible in this book. They were just put in an unfortunate situation where they couldn't be together but it was hard staying away from each other. The only way things would have been resolved quickly is if one of them made the sacrifice of their job or education.

The overall connection between this book and my inquiry project is that certain situations can not be changed no matter how strong the love is. This is clearly shown through Wills and Lakes' immediate love and protective feelings. If it was possible for either of them to put each other as their first priorities they would have to think about the future of their younger brothers and how their relationship would affect their personal situations. I think in this day and age it is a more unrealistic concept considering he is a twenty one year old teacher. Which is very hard to come by since going to college and extra education usually takes longer. But I could see this being a problem with an eighteen year old and an older teacher. But at that point it is considered wrong and either way the pair would have to wait.

This book had a powerful message that no matter how long you are apart from someone if you are meant to be you will naturally come back together. This is exactly what happened with Will and Lake even though they had to stay away from each other their love brought them back together in the end. I believe this book answers part of my inquiry question about the fact that certain situations can keep people apart very easily. As I continue to explore my inquiry question, how is love affected by outside people and situations? I am going to begin looking at more impossible love situations and if love still ends up alive in the end. I would like to take my understanding of Slammed and apply it to real life situations to see if love conquers all like in the books.
