Smoking in Public Places Essay Example

Indoor restaurants and shops today prohibit smoking due to many reasons. In some countries, there are laws against smoking at certain places, or can even be illegal to buy cigarettes. The real question is, does smoking affect others? Why do some restaurant owners do not allow their customers to smoke in their property? As a non-smoker, I strongly support illegality of cigarettes considering these reasons.

First of all, smoking is very bad for us. Cigarettes include harmful substances which destroys our internal organs. Tar is one example of them; it destroys a part of our throat which has a purpose of removing mucus. Other than smokers, it is even worse for people standing around them. As people exhale their cigar smoke, it stays around that person and affect others as they inhale it. According to a recent scientific research, it has been proven that all family members will consume nicotine due to one cigarette user. Nicotine is also one of the substances, but they are much more dangerous to children and household pets who has weaker lungs than adults. 

Second, smoke has extremely unpleasant smell. This can be more disadvantageous in restaurants where people eat and drink. Since smoke stays in the air and is not easy to get rid of, it might stay in a room for long term and disturb the customers. 

Finally, smoking can leave garbage at any place. Few days ago, I have read a environmental research about which type of waste is most commonly found in the ocean. The first place was cigarette butts, nevertheless people only care about plastic straws, which ranked in the 6th place. People do not recognize the effect of smoking is also available to the environment, not only health. Additionally, most smokers leave cigarette butts and ashes in the restaurant, and this might be one of the annoying factors for store owners.

In conslusion, I agree with the statement that smoking should not be permitted in restaurant and laws that prohibit it should be upheld. As I have always seen my family members smoke, I thought to myself that smoking should be illegal in most part of the world.
