Hydrogen is the most essential element coming from the periodic table when speaking of society. There can be many utilizations including its sustainable energy system and usage in industrial processes.
Hydrogen provides a cleaner, more sustainable energy system. In this case, fuel cells produced by the combination of hydrogen and oxygen atoms created are being used in modern day appliances. Fuel cells are considered as efficient low emissions which are environmentally friendly. In fact, it doesn't produce as much waste as fossil fuels so it can be an efficient alternative. It is evaluated that there is naturally a bountiful amount of hydrogen throughout the universe, meaning that there can be many uses of it when implying to humanity. There are large and small fuel cells. Large fuel cells can dispense electricity to electric power grids, backup/emergency power in buildings, and supply electricity in places that aren’t connected to electric power grids. For example, our classrooms and halls include large fuel cells, they have emergency lights in case of natural disasters or in situations where there’s no light involved. Small fuel cells can provide power to laptop computers, along with cell phones, and military programs. There are a wide variety of fuel cells that are to provide for many different applications, such as NASA, they were one of the first to use hydrogen fuel cells to power electrical systems on spacecraft. As we all know, globally we’ve been in a detriment due to the rise in pollution. Lately, implementing hydrogen in power plant fuel has been a trend.
When referring to elements being used in society, hydrogen is a big contribution in industries. Notably in processing foods and along with many productions in refining products. There are mainly two industrial applications. The first application is to produce ammonia for agricultural fertilizer, as well as to be used as an affordable environmentally friendly refrigerant. Moreover, it is commonly used in hydrocracking that creates petroleum products like gasoline and diesel. In this petroleum refining industry, it is also used to discard contaminants like sulfur to create methanol instead. On top of that, hydrogen has several other common industrial applications. Hydrogenated vegetable oils, as in margarine, and butter spreads were once unsaturated fats turned into saturated oils. Plus it is used in other fields like metalworking, welding, flat glass production, and electronics manufacturing. In addition, it’s even useful in the medical field. Studies have shown that hydrogen gas is seen as therapeutic for a plethora of different diseases. As stated in the ‘National Library of Medicine’, “Since the 2007 discovery that molecular hydrogen (H2) has selective antioxidant properties, multiple studies have shown that H2 has beneficial effects in diverse animal models and human disease. This review discusses H2 biological effects and potential mechanisms of action in various diseases, including metabolic syndrome, organ injury, and cancer; describes effective H2 delivery approaches; and summarizes recent progress toward H2 applications in human medicine.” Referring back to fuel cells, this allows us to open new opportunities in the hydrogen energy industry. Particularly, in areas like space exploration, aviation, global logistics, public transportation, and etc. Doing so can take us one step ahead of the future and so we all as society can have a greater one.
All things considered, Hydrogen is the most valuable element in advance to society. By its nature, hydrogen is very much practical to our future energy system and development of industries. What would you think society ought to be like if hydrogen didn’t exist?
