Hello class. Poverty has always been a huge problem. As of now, about 689 million people are surviving on less than $1.90 per day, and about ⅔ of these people are women and children. About 70% of people who live in poverty have little to no education, and by 2030, it is estimated that 67% of people living in poverty will live in fragile conditions like sub standard housing. These living conditions have become increasingly concentrated in sub Saharan Africa, where about 40% of people live in extremely impoverished conditions.

These developing countries are considered to be at the very bottom of the global economy, since living conditions are abysmal, and healthcare and social services are almost impossible to find. Because of this, citizens in these countries are frequently subjected to famine and natural disasters. In these countries, many people have experienced long-term political unrest, usually in the form of dictatorships or war.

So, how do these countries get to this point? Poverty happens when citizens are not able to support themselves, usually because of a major event such as natural disasters or insurrections. This leads to unemployment and famine in poorer countries. The country’s government can’t handle the stress of fixing the problem, so they give up, making the problem worse. Eventually, the country can’t sustain itself independently, and is almost completely reliant on other countries. Even with help, these countries won’t be able to sustain themselves independently due to the root of the problem not being fixed, essentially creating a endless cycle of poverty and tragedy.

In my opinion the root causes of poverty is a lack of empathy for poor people and ignorance. There is a quote from Mahatma Ghandi where he says “ 'the true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members'. I personally believe this is relevant in today’s world. We live in a society where poor people are either stigmitized or unreconized. This is a big problem, since poor people are a major part of the global population(about 10%). We can’t just exclude poor people when most of them did nothing wrong. Instead, we should help them get their life back together, and support them.

Now, how do we fix the roots of poverty? We’ll the first step we should do is reconize that not everyone is privileged in this world, so we shouldn’t take things for granted. A lot of people in first world countries have a place to live, with food and water. Us as a society realizing this would create a lot more empathy for poor people.

Secondly, we should take action and do the best we can. This involves but is not limited to: spreading awareness online and giving a donation if you can. Doing this won’t always work, as some people are more close minded than others, but it will make a long lasting impact in the long run, even if you don’t realize it will.

Overall, we need to recognize that poverty is a big issue, and make it one of our top priorities to help stop it. I am Michael and thank you for listening to my Tedaclamation.
