We live in a world were people feel as if steroids for a sport is fair, or it is safe for your body to take in a forgein substance. While it helps your muscles get bigger and heals you faster when injured, steroids are harmful to the body and the sport because they have horrible side effects, it is considered cheating during sports, and in most places they are illegal.

To begin with, steroids are harmful to the body because they have terrible side effects. Side effects include increased risk to heart attack, devlopment of liver disease and liver cancer, etc. (Denoon). You may ask “ Well how exactly do they effect your body?” To answer that question we talked to Kenneth Mautner, MD, of Emory University, “ Both men and women naturally produce testosterone. But like all hormones -- which regulate the body's most basic functions -- throwing one's testosterone out of balance can have wide-ranging consequences.” This explains that when you use steroids, they throw off all of your hormones and this is what results your body having to deal with the side effects. When you take the steroids your body starts to crave it so it will stop producing specific hormones in replace of the steroids causeing differnet side effects to kick in and take over.

Second, steroids are harmful because it is consicdered cheating during sports. Cheating during sports is harmful to your body because it can pentilize you or cause you to be in danger in the midst of performance. Taking sport inhancing steriods are harmful because in the middle of a performance you could possibly have a seizure. Having seizures damage your brain some to where it could cause you to eventually not be able to play sports anymore. In sports if you do that you are cheating yourself, your team, and you sport.  For example, “Thomas Hicks, a British-born American, was flagging late in the race, when his handler stepped in to give him brandy and an injection of strychnine – a.k.a., rat poison. The drug stimulated muscles, but only briefly, prompting his handler to give him another shot that was just enough to get him across the finish line, where he collapsed. (Another injection probably would have killed him.)” This goes to show that while cheating to win by taking steroids, Hicks could have easily died. Steroids are incredibly harmful to the sport and body because once it takes over one it takes over the other. Would you rather die a painful death by cheating or try to win the Olympics by pure talent?

Lastly, steroids, like most drugs, are illegal in many places. It is just as easy to overdose on steroids than it is to overdose on heroin. Allowing yourself to take in a forgien substance over and over again is killing your body. According to The Conversation, “Anabolic steroid use is illegal in the US, the UK, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, and Saudi Arabia.” This goes to show that there are many other places other than the US who have the same mindset about steroids. Now steroids may be illegal in those countires but they are further illegal in sports, bodybuilding, wrestling, the Olympics, etc.

There are some people who we can all see are not on the right path in life. They aren’t doing so well in school, do drugs, etc, but one common thing that happens to high schoolers now a days is that they use steroids to try to look better. They do turn out looking better for the sport on the outside, but the inside is a whole different story. Their lungs are not in the best shape, their liver efficiently functions have decreased, and through all of this they are not stopping. Sometimes it might be too late to stop because of how heavily your body depends on the steroids, but it would be better to to stop now and work on fixing it in order to live rather than killing your self.

Some people may choose to argue that steroids help you heal faster when you have injuries. Well this maybe to true to some degree, but steriods cause to much harm to your body after you have healed. Think 10 years down the future when no longer using them. You would have to take different supplements to rebalance your testosterone levels and after that you may still have negative side effects. For example, Mike, 23 continues to take steroids to help in the weight lifting compitions. When he doesnt compete anymore in 10 years his hormone levels will be messed up and will have to find ways to try to fix them before the side effects get even worse.

In conclusion, while people know the effects of the steroids they might not know how exactly they effect the body. One of the main reason people take steroids is because of pressure or for looks. However steroids is not the first option. Steroids do help heals you faster when injured, but they are harmful to the body and the sport because they have horrible side effects, it is considered cheating during sports, and in most places they are illegal. There are many things to think about with steroids, but taking them is not one of them.
