During the rise of internet use among all generations, teenagers have been substantially affected by the prevalence of smartphones in schools. Recent information shows that the #2 leading addiction among teenagers is internet use. And while students gloss over the downsides, teachers and parents are examining an extreme detriment to their kids' learning abilities. Steve Gardiner with Education Week states “In a career that spans 38 years, I have not seen any single diversion that so distracts students from reading, writing, thinking, and working.” (Source c) By understanding the severity of the persistent use of technology within classrooms, I can presume that the banishment of cell phones within schools would be of benefit to students and teachers at large.

Many advocates for cell phone use in schools fail to consider the numbers. Richard Freed with the Huffington Post examples this with simulated evidence by stating, “ students who did not use their phones “wrote down 62 percent more information in their notes, took more detailed notes, were able to recall more detailed information from the lecture, and scored a full letter grade and a half higher on a multiple choice test than those students who were actively using their mobile phones” The argument that “children’s safety is improved if parents and children can reach one another by phone during the school day”, is incomparable to blatant evidence of the improvement among students, absent of the use of phones (Source B). It should be a priority for not only teachers, but students as well, to sacrifice communication among each other for increased performance and higher success rates.

NEA Today provides evidence claiming “50% of students feel like they are addicted to their phones” (source D). With technology being the #2 addiction among teens in the United States, that is 50% of students not reaching their full potential inside and outside of the classroom. This damaging behavior, like any addiction, can seem to drown many students in the standards of social media.  The Huffington post again, claims that “research is revealing that kids who spend more time online are more likely to be involved in cyberbullying than kids who spend less” (source B). The majority cyberbullying happens at school, which makes many wonder how cyberbullying would change if cell phones weren’t present in a school setting. Students haven’t experienced emotional trauma from 7 hours of being apart from their phone, but the families of the 41 people who have died by suicide because of cyberbullying since 2003, have.

Leaving students in charge of their own success is what they experience when left with their phones at school. Deciding over that text back, or that one piece of information that just might be significant to high performance. Letting go of technology use within schools could dramatically increase students' performance, social development, and mental health. It should be high on administrators lists to ban the use of cell phones within schools, if they are trying to heighten the wellbeing of students.
