A massive philosophical question that is still thought about nowadays is whether God exists. Many arguments support or go against this statement, but the two most well-known arguments are Paley’s watch analogy and Aquinas’s cosmological argument. As a theist, I believe that God exists and believe that he is the cause of everything in this universe. In this essay, I will question God’s existence with proof from the watch analogy and the cosmological argument.

In 1743-1805, a man called William Paley argued that the complexity of the world suggests that there is a purpose to it. This suggests that there must be a designer of the universe which he suggested was God. There are many ideas about evolution in science. But, Paley’s watch analogy provides a way for both ideas about evolution and belief In the existence of God to work together.  With God as the designer of the whole universe, he must have also designed evolution because evolution is so complex that it couldn’t have been created by itself. Therefore, the only explanation for the existence of evolution is God, who designed and planned out everything in the world. This means that Paley’s watch analogy is true, meaning that God exists.

However, many atheists may disagree with Paley’s watch analogy. They may argue that even if we accept that the world was designed, we cannot just assume that God is the designer. The bible mentions that ‘God causes all things to work together for good’. If the world were designed by God, then the evil and suffering in the world suggest that the belief that God is all-good is false. This is called the Dysteleological Argument, an argument from poor design. The Dysteleological Argument suggests that if God exists, then he doesn’t have to fin-tune a physical universe for life to exist. Since the watch analogy proves the Bible wrong, this proves that God doesn’t exist.

On the other hand, the watch analogy fits well with the creation story in the Bible. The Bible states that ‘it is he who made the earth by his power’. This proves to us that God is the creator of the earth which supports Paley’s watch analogy. The Bible says that God created day and night, the sky, land and sea, stars, sun, moon, animals and man. When the Bible describes the creations he made on each of the 6 days, it proves to us that most of the complex things in this world didn’t just appear out of nowhere but was created by someone capable of doing so. God. This shows us that the watch analogy proves Gods existence.

But, atheists may also argue against the watch analogy. Many theists say that God controls evolution, but the theory of natural selection which was put forward by Charles Darwin shows us how species develop independently without a reference to the designer God. Many people agree with this theory because it oversees this natural process – God created nature along with everything else. Since natural selection proves to us that God didn’t design everything, this proves the watch analogy wrong. This may mean that God doesn’t exist.

The cosmological argument states that everything in the world has a cause and that nothing is the cause of itself. There cannot be an infinite chain of causes which means that there has to be a first cause which we call God. The cosmological argument is based on logic. Logic states that things can’t just cause themselves to exist. It is only logical to assume that someone has cause everything in this world to exist. The only person capable of doing something like this is God. This supports the Cosmological argument which therefore means that God exists.

But, atheists may argue that the cosmological argument states that ‘everything has a cause.' This means that the argument is also suggesting that God has a cause too. So even if the argument is true, it still leaves us the question of who created God. This proves the argument to be false. Therefore, if the argument is false then God doesn’t exist.

In conclusion, I still believe that God exists. I believe that Aquinas’s cosmological argument and Paley’s watch analogy supports the big statement on whether God exists. The watch analogy can fit perfectly with the biblical stories of creation whilst also proving that ideas about evolution and belief in the existence of God work together. The cosmological argument proves that God is the cause of everything in this universe. Therefore, I believe that God exists.
