Temple's emotions are like an amplifier due to her autism. They are stronger compared to none autistic people. Animals helped Temple deal with challenges of autism by helping her find something she loved and helping her make school and social life easier.

In the Temple Grandin movie, we learned that Temple was more sensitive to objects moving, like a fan whirring and the vent creaking. According to "Hampshire School for Wayward Wizards", horses freak out to any slight change. She was able to connect to them because of how they viewed the world. In paragraph 3, Sy Montgomery states "...because Temple also noticed the same details the horses did - like a bale of hay slightly out of place - she could make small changes to calm the animal's fear before it turned to panic".

Temple's social life wasn't all that great. Kids picked on her because she repeated the same stories over and over. They teased her by calling her "tape recorder" and she responded by smacking them. She was introduced to horseback riding and she enjoyed it, however when she smacked somebody, she got her privileges taken away. So that she could be with her horses, she learned to cry when someone teased her instead of hitting them. The horses gave her strength. This is shown in paragraph 14, by saying "Animals kept me going. I spent every waking minute that I didn't have to be studying or going to school with those horses." Because she was good with horses, her peers enjoyed her company. This improved her social life.

Temple can relate to animals because they are both sensitive to their surroundings. Horses gave her strength, confidence, and a hobby she loved. Because her classmates thought their relationship was cool, her school and social life became easier. Although she may have felt alone due to her autism, the animals helped her feel like she belonged.
