TITLE: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Man With The Twisted Lip

AUTHOR: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

ILLUSTRATOR: Sidney Paget

MAIN CHARACTERS: Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Mr. and Mrs. St. Clair, and Hugh Boone

SETTING: The opium den where Mrs. St. Clair saw her husband last time, and the county of Lee, where the mansion Mr. and Mrs. St. Clair live. Both are located in London.

What happened in the book?

The book starts with Dr. Watson telling his colleague, Sherlock Holmes, about Neville St. Clair. Mrs. St. Clair thinks that Hugh Boone, a beggar from London, murdered her husband. The last time Mrs. St. Clair looked, her husband was in an opium den, where she was roughly taken out by a Lascar; then she saw bloodstain splashing in the window, where she saw her husband at the same opium den. Behind this window was Hugh Boone. So, she called the police. The Lascar and Hugh Boone are the only ones there. Despite looking a bloodstain on the Lascar’s shirt sleeve, the policeman captured Boone by request of Mrs. St. Clair.

When Watson and Holmes reached St. Clair's mansion, they asked some questions to Mrs. St. Clair about her husband, like ‘And you were surprised to see him in Swandam Lane?… He disappeared so suddenly?’. The next morning, they went to the police station where Hugh Boone was. There, Holmes caught a sponge and cleaned Boone’s face. Boone results being Neville St. Clair. Consequently, Mr. St. Clair told them everything about how he got into the world of begging: until he graduated from college, he worked at a London journal. His editor wanted him to write articles about begging in London, so he put on makeup, made a twisted lip expression, and started acting in the streets like a beggar to have a basis for his articles. Mr. St. Clair doesn’t get so much money for his job, so he had the idea of gaining money as a beggar. His wife doesn’t know a lot about his job, but one day she saw him entering an opium den. He got help from the Lascar, so no one would enter with him. The bloodstain Mrs. St. Clair saw was a self-inflicted cut into his hand, so Neville’s wife would never get close to there again.

What was the main plot of the book, and how was it solved?

Neville St. Clair, last seen by Mrs. St. Clair, entering an opium den. His wife thought that he was murdered by Hugh Boone, a beggar. But Sherlock Holmes, with his ingenuity, and of course Watson, solved this case: he caught a sponge and washed Boone’s face, resulting being Mr. St. Clair, who tells each word of how and why he got into the world begging.

My personal connection with the book is…

I think the manner in how Mr. St. Clair, and any human, can be teased by money, is horrible. Notice how Mr. St. Clair became more and more greedy. He said, “As I grew richer, I grew more ambitious…” he became a beggar, leaving his wife alone, hopeless of looking at him again. Furthermore, he lost himself for money. Instead of looking for reasonable solutions, he became a slave to money.

What did you think of the book?

It was a great book, better than I thought.

At first, the story doesn’t have too much sense, but when it advances, you have more and more expectations of what’s next. In the middle of the book, you start discovering what’s going on with Neville St. Clair and the story.

Every single page in the story is more fascinating. You want to know what is occurring with Neville St. Clair and where he was. Definitely, this is one of my favorite books.
