Maureen Killoran once said, “Stress is not what happens to us. It is our response to what happens. And the response is something we can choose”. According to the statistics published by National Crime Records Bureau, there is one student every hour that commits suicide (Saha,2017). The bureau registered 1.8% of students who committed suicide due to failing in examinations and an 80% rise in suicide rates during a one-year time frame. With the increased duties he has and the new experiences he is about to have, it is normal for students to be stressed. While some of these stressors the students probably dealt with in high school, others may be new to them which makes them suffer more. Student life has become increasingly stressful and they can't deal with this suffering which ends them up failing in their lives. Knowing the causes of this stress will undoubtedly assist students in overcoming it. Colleges students face stress due to key reasons which are academic pressure, and individual determinants.

One important reason why college student stress is the academic system. Academic pressure is formally defined as an experience in which a student is burdened by the demands of time and energy to achieve specific academic goals (by Ben Davis). College students are under a great deal of academic pressure, which causes them to be anxious all of the time. Students become concerned and overthink how they will complete a large number of tests and homework assignments in a short period of time. Also, Students who want to earn a good mark are frequently dissatisfied with their current grade, which causes them to get stressed. Furthermore, there are inefficient teaching methods that cause students to lose comprehension and make it more difficult for them to gain information. For example, students will not grasp knowledge if professors just give them the facts without employing films, slides, overhead projectors, tools, ICT resources. As a result, pupils will be concerned about not having the necessary information to succeed in college. Teacher-student relationships have a significant impact on students. A tense connection between the professor and the student stems from the student's lack of comfort with the topic's professor, who will lessen his passion for studying the subject and raise his dread of failing it. One of the factors that make the student-professor interaction difficult is the professor's lack of respect for the student, who he regards as a person inferior to him or who lacks comprehension. The student, on the other hand, might exacerbate the tension in the relationship by doing things that make a negative impression on him, such as failing to attend class and criticizing the instructor. In other words, the student feels frustrated and stressed if they are exposed to academic pressure, which is something that has become certain in the lives of all students.

There are individual-specific factors cause student’s stress. The first important factor is having problems in financial management. Hank Johnson said, “The rising costs of higher education coupled with the stress of paying student loans are putting increasing pressure on students". In fact, colleges students have a lot of amounts required them to pay for it. They have to pay for the college premium which in some universities is high. Besides students have to pay for their college books no matter how much they would be. There are transportation costs that students need to get to their colleges. Also, the costs of renting an apartment when a student is studying at a college far away from home. Second, students have difficulties managing their personal lives. According to a study published on the OXFORD LEARNING website Students who have weak organizing skills are more likely to be stressed at college. This is frequently due to a lack of sufficient preparation, such as the tools and knowledge required to study. They may continue to lag behind if their organizational abilities do not improve, leading to increased stress and frustration at college. Finally, the changes in the living atmosphere causes stress to students. When students move to colleges, they move to a new environment that they will need to deal with properly, and this is what makes them nervous and unaccustomed to the atmosphere of this environment. There is no doubt that every student encounter circumstances that affect him and, as a result, his academic performance.

College students' anxiety has become an inevitable phenomenon, as well as a source of fear in their lives. Academic pressure and individual variables are two major sources of stress for college students.  However, regardless of the student's level of anxiety, he may transform it into a challenge to motivate him to achieve his goal. This is what Oprah Winfrey referred to it when she stated "Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do".
