The Character of King Richard II in William Shakespeare's Play

For Richard to be named king his has to have more power and control over the people already at the top and one of his ways of doing that is by using the people close to Queen Elizabeth against her to where she can’t do anything but look from the sidelines. 

Richard uses the trust Queen Elizabeth has with others and the relationships between his brothers to take those who provide her close one’s with safety and stops him from becoming king. As Queen Elizabeth is being blamed for Clarences imprisonment, “falsely to draw me in these vile suspects” (Shakespeare 47), is being accused by Richard of sending his brother to prison. By stating that Clarence has been sent to jail because of her she loses the trust of Clarence and the also affects the health of her husband King Edward because of old age and applied stress. Being that the king Is getting sickly because of stress caused by Richard resorts in the queen falling in a trap not knowing what will happen to her if somebody close to her is taken away because of Richard. When the Queen is realizing what Richard is after,” action shows itself against my children, brothers, and myself” (Shakespeare 45), knowing that Richard is after the crown. 

The Queen doesn’t want Richard to harm the people close to her, but she knows he will because the people close to her are the same people in his way to becoming king. When queen Margaret is complaining about Richard’s doings,” hear me, you wrangling pirates” (Shakespeare 53), referring to Richard and a person who takes things from others through the act of illegal means. She knows that Richard will take whatever Is needed for him to be crowned king and it doesn’t matter what it is. She is regretful of her son’s actions and it is too late for him to change his ways now. Relating to how Richard will take or kill the people in his way to become king which are most likely related to Queen Elizbeth. Transition. Transition. To maintain the power, he has gained he will take and use as many people as he needs to achieve his goals. Richard uses Queen Elizabeth motherhood and her incapability to protect the people around her to gain total control over her.
