The movie The Dead Poets Society portrays how you will make mistakes in life no matter what. This tells us that it is everything to try something new and seize the day. Everyone is so quick to second guess and overthink aspects of their lives that may hold them back. The lifestyle of carpe diem can allow people to broaden their horizons, experience new parts of life and sometimes change the course of their life all together, but it will not always be positive and very often something will be life changing in a way we don't expect. This movie was able to depict both the positives and negatives of living your life to the fullest.

All of these boys start off the movie living life normally. One that is planned out for them from the start. Most not even releasing that they have no say in the matter, that when new experiences arrive they don't know the ethical and logical way to deal with them. When Mr Ketting introduces them to the mantra of carpe diem it opens up a whole new way of living and they struggle with living by it along with following their own principles. Mr ketting’s introduction of carpe diem presents a lifestyle change to the boys and alters their values and outlook on situations in their life. This alone can be looked at as a positive allowing the boys to “ think for themselves” something the principal of their private school doesn't believe is something they are ready for. It does however allow them to grow and create their own supported decisions. In term giving them room to make mistakes, and in the movie defiey      people of power. Most times ending up in brutal situations that shape them as people.

A great example of the boys finding out the hard way the positives and negatives of carpe diem would be Knox Overstreet. He, although not being the main character, was the first of the boys to try to live their life to the fullest. Acting on a romantic impulse he felt for Chris. “Thou art more lovely and more temperate:” a Shakespeare sonnet, although not realizing it this poem Ketting introduced to them starts shows what sensing the day in romantic relationships can be like influencing Knox. Chris at the time though did have a boyfriend creating a conflict that shows Knox that acting on emotions and feeling without thinking them through is not always the best way to live. He is a great representation in the movie of how taking chances and seizing the day can cause problems and give rewards. he first makes a move on Chris it ends in him getting beat up. Although it does all workout for him in the end, because of his efforts he is able to go to the show with her. This is his way of experiencing the positives along with the downsides of going for life with all you have and taking chances. Luckily his story ends happily, something that doesn't always happen as we saw in the movie by following the lifestyle of carpe diem.

In my personal opinion no matter how you decide to live your life whether you take risks or try new things nothing will be perfect. This may be a pessimistic way to think but playing it safe has issues of its own and anything can happen. What's going to happen is going to happen and I don't think we should necessarily focus on seizing the day but more so learning from the experiences we have to better ourselves. Life isn't necessarily about being the best or being the one who did the most but enjoying the time we have while we can because we don't know what is going to happen.
