We live in a digital age where the internet is the most essential part of our daily lives, we are connected to the internet through the day and night, because of the huge role the internet plays in our lives, some tend to believe that it’s a harm to society. Many would argue about some of the disadvantages that come with “too much” internet usage; while others believe that it is the most cutting-edge modern technology and science innovation; that if the internet were to shut, the whole world would simply pause with no moving forward. After conducting my research on both sides, I’ve come to the conclusion that the rationale that led others to believe in the ill-use of the internet is in fact illogical and with baseless reasoning.

The internet is being abused irresponsibly these days, which has a harmful impact on society and complicates our lives… as one technology despiser would say; it is the people who rely the least on technology that seem to have the most slanted beliefs on the topic. One of the biggest concerns people tend to have is internet addiction, as seen most commonly in our generation, a generation that was raised and bred by this digital age. When we spend the majority of our time surfing the internet, disconnected from the real world, it is difficult for others to see the efficacy of the matter. Other concerns are made based on assumptions, including internet being a cause for mental problems, teenage suicide and that it is affecting the development of childrens’ brains… etc. People have a lot of controversies in the matter, however, they’re merely opinions and myths. One of my favorite sources I came across while researching about the technology topic is an article written by a psychologist who is involved with teens and parents, in this article, Fergusen debunks some of the greatest myths about technology addiction, “Most of the discussion of technology addictions suggest that technology itself is mesmerizing, harming normal brains. But my research suggests that technology addictions generally are symptoms of other, underlying disorders like depression, anxiety and attention problems. People don’t think that depressed people who sleep all day have a ‘bed addiction’.” (Fergusen par 14). In today’s society where most people face challenging mental issues from stress and anxiety to depression, the type of issues with little awareness; we see how it can be easy to put the blame on what’s in front of our eyes, the internet, technology. When it comes to cyber dangers such as bullying, frauds and scams or graphic content, unfortunately, with such real-life issues one can only be careful, we face the same issues everyday where in reality, it is inescapable, it would be arbitrary to blame our devices that simply give us and others a platform to act out the same thing one would do in real-life.

To see what technology has brought to our world, it outweighs any possible controversies that occur, with the technology of the internet a new universe was created that provides any type of information at the press of a button on your computer. It's difficult to realize that people lived without the internet for many years, the Internet has catapulted our society into the age of fast and accessible knowledge. I realize I rely on the internet for everything, which allows me to be creative in all aspects of my life. It's a wonderful way to connect individuals from all over the world since it's inexpensive, quick, and easy to use. People from all over the world may contact each other via social networking, video calls, texting or emailing, and even attending job interviews, making the world a smaller place. The educational sphere has also undergone significant upheaval. As a student, I can't tell you how many times I use Google to search for information, especially when it comes to my academic work. I would rather sit and research anything online than go to a library and spend time looking through books. To make studying easier for students, the university and library offer digital resources including eBooks and virtual learning websites, as well as course data, modules, weekly lectures, and discussion forums, which is a useful way for students to learn together and from each other online. This technology, the internet, is used by more than half of the world's population. It is an expression of endless innovation and creativity that enables individuals to better the quality of their lives. The Internet is causing economic and political upheavals in society, being a productive ground for the establishment of new partnerships. People's reliance on the internet is not impacted by technology, but actively influences its usage and effect. The internet has transformed life from sluggish moving tracks to speedier and faster outcomes, people connect to the internet based on their interests. ”The researchers reported that using the Internet triggers key centers in the brain that usually atrophy with age and lack of use” (Gaudin par. 5). The Internet has a significant impact on human and societal development. I believe that using the Internet is essential for success in one's career, business, and life.

We have witnessed a technological revolution. People are so used to technology that they cannot picture life without their smartphone or laptop. Digitisation has occurred in every sector imaginable, from our food to our education. Although some would still have concerns and worries, the internet is not the real menace to society.
