The Era of Good Feelings was a time of happiness and calmness due to no political divide. The dying out of the Federalists party led to what could have been thought of as a time of little drama and disagreement, may have not been the case. Despite its name, the Era of Good Feelings, was a time period of drama and disagreement because of conflicts between branches and levels of government, disagreements between regions of the country, and international drama.

During this time, conflict took place within the government. Especially between the branches as well as the hierarchy. In document B, it is explained James Madison’s veto of the Bonus Bill was deemed unconstitutional. Leading to a conflict between the branches, “I feel in reconciling the bill with the Constitution of the United States to return it with that objection to the House of Representatives, in which it originated”(Doc B). The previously stated quote explains the conflict between President Madison with The House of Representatives. This theme of disagreement is also displayed in document G. “I am  compelled to object to its passage and return the bill to the House of  Representatives, in which it originated, under a conviction that Congress do not  possess the power under the Constitution to pass such a law”(Doc G). During the time of the Era of Good Feelings, much disagreement between the branches were displayed.

In addition, much conflict also took place between the regions of America. Such as in document E, the Missouri Compromise explains in details with rules of new happening slavery. In the quote,  “slavery and involuntary servitude, otherwise than in the  punishment of crimes whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall be and  is hereby forever prohibited. . . .”(Doc E). The Missouri Compromise had to aid to both sides of the argument concerning slavery. Disagreement is also demonstrated in both documents I and C, as for they demonstrate disagreements of slavery geographically as well as concerning the tariff of 1816.

Furthermore, much drama was demonstrated internationally. In document A, The Monroe Doctrine is explained as telling European countries to stay out of the western hemisphere. In the quote, “It is impossible that the allied powers should extend their  political system to any portion of either continent without endangering our peace  and happiness”(Doc A). It is demonstrated that European countries should not stretch to America with no reasoning, and not with the purpose to destroy happiness and good feelings.

In conclusion, America experienced much disagreement and drama between the government, regions, and internationally during the Era of Good Feelings. The government participated in much disagreement between presidents and The House of Representatives. Regions of America experienced much disagreement due to geographical ideas. Also, America’s involvement with European areas ultimately led to more individuality.
