What is feminism? What does it do? Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of equality of the sexes, in other words feminism is the belief that men and women should get equal rights. The first wave of feminism took place in the late 19th century/ early 20th century. We have come a long way since then but there is still more to do.

Sexism has been a common act of society and socially acceptable since the first ever human. Sexism is not just found around women but also men. Today I am going to talk about sexism revolving around women. According to 2017 data from the PEW research centre 4 out of 10 women in the USA have experienced job discrimination just because of their sex. In the UK 70% of the NHS are women yet male doctors get pain 18.9% more than female doctors, now what do you think would happen if they all got sick of not being treated unequally to the males in their field/work? Maybe they would quit and only 30% of the staff would remain. In the USA male physicians earn $86,000 more compared to their female colleagues. What does that say about society? In England and the USA they have to pay to go to universities and colleges. Women go there, work hard and do the same if not better than men. What do they get in return?

This is a more serious subject, 1 of 6 women have been sexually assaulted in the USA annually compared to the 1 out of 33 men who have experienced an attempted rape/completed rape. 1 out of 5 women get sexually assaulted while in college. I don’t know about any other females but that makes me terrified to walk out on the street on my own, to go to university/ college or to even go out to a busy place on my own. This is disgusting and something needs to change.

Only 10 countries have equal rights for men and women that includes Denmark, Belgium, France, Sweden, Latvia, Luxembourg, Canada, Iceland, Portugal and Ireland. That isn't even 6%. A survey was done in 2001 in the USA of how many men were feminists 20% were considered feminists, 75% saying they were not and 24% saying it was an insult. I know that some feminists are extreme and it makes people not want to identify as one because they don’t want to be grouped and stereotyped with some psychos who can be horrible to men but unfortunately with everything there are always a few bad people who spoil the true meaning of what a feminist is.

I pray that after reading this essay some people might reconsider what it is to be a feminist and why they should at least support it. The world isn't the same as it was 100 years ago and its going to carry on changing but at this rate it's going to take 108 years to close the gender pay gap, not even the rights. That's why we need everyone's help to support something like this because it's important to humanity and society.
