Hand grenades had an impact on the Civil War because they were easy to transport and carry around during battle, they were effective, and there were many different types that could do different things.

The first reason why Grenades had an impact during the civil war were because they were easy to transport and carry around during battle. Since the grenades were not that heavy they were easy to carry around. The document states the grenades ranged from around 1 to 5 pounds and they were pretty small. (Google SItes) The soldiers could carry a lot overseas because they were small and light. So that is why the grenades had an impact on the civil war.

The second reason why grenades had an impact on the civil war is, they were effective. When the grenade hit the ground a massive explosion went off making a crater in the ground, anyone near the explosion would be dead or seriously injured. Later on in the war the enemy found a way to stop the grenades from going off by putting blankets on the ground, which made the grenades they used on land no longer that useful.  However the Grenade was still very effective on ships and overseas. The last and final reason why the grenade had an impact on the civil war is, there were many different types of grenades that all did different things. The first grenade used in the civil war was called the Ketchum grenade, this grenade had a suction cup with a spring attached to the inside of it that when the grenade hit the ground the spring would coil back and ignite the gunpowder. This grenade was used in close range battles. The next grenade used in the civil war was an underwater mine. The underwater mine was used to destroy enemy ships carrying supplies or troops. ( HIstory.com) This grenade was very successful and effective. That is who the grenade had an impact on the civil war.

In conclusion the grenade had an impact on the civil war because it was easy to transport, they were effective, and there were many different types of grenades.
