Dystopian stories frequently portray the ideas of imperfection. Characters in novels and movies repeatedly try to brainwash citizens by using technological control to create an ideal perfect utopian society. In the book Fahrenheit 451, the movie Ready Player 1, and the text “Harrison Bergeron” technology impacts society by distracting unaware people from their real-world problems to intentionally create a dystopia where people construct metaphorical walls of personal isolation.

In Fahrenheit 451, and Ready Player 1, Technology negatively impacts society by brainwashing people with technological controls to always be isolated. In the book Fahrenheit 451, Clarisse gets brainwashed by education systems when Ray Bradbury writes, “It’s a lot of funnels and a lot of water poured down the spout and out the bottom, and them telling us it's wine when it's not. They run us so ragged by the end of the day we can't do anything but go to bed or head to a fun park to bully people around…” (Bradbury, 42) Most people Clarisse’s age act like they are mindless, although that's how it is supposed to work in this society. In their education system, kids are brainwashed to not anticipate and comprehend how we know to recognize it today. This is how they were directed to entertain themselves. To be mindless. They run around undertaking activities that wouldn’t matter in the long run to themselves. Acting mindlessly at such a youthful age like hers can impact many people’s friendships and relationships with other people because they ignore their issues and isolate themselves from everything in the real world. This is equally important because if people are isolating themselves it will create them to lose social connections, later impacting their mental health and other issues in their brain to create a dystopian society with everyone having their own mini-worlds in their heads.

In the movie Ready Player 1, “The main character Wade lives in a society in 2026 where humans spend every 'awake hour’ playing realistic video games in something called, “The oasis”. The oasis is a mass multiplayer online simulation game created by James Halliday and Ogden Morrow of “Gregarious Simulation Systems.” Mr. Halliday created this game, so people all over the world could play this game together and use their skills to fight games and spend real money to contribute to their character. This game was popular all throughout their society.” (Ernest Cline) This movie uses technology to isolate people due to having the oasis as a game to play and isolating every human so there are metaphorical walls and humans have little to no connections in real life. They get brainwashed into playing 24/7, then life turns into a game of survival. If you are not attending school, Then how will you learn and be able to develop more social skills between other humans in real life? Technology Is an impact of this society and Fahrenheit 451’s because they are using technological control to brainwash people to promote isolation when not doing anything else, distracting them from the problems that they have in their real lives on their own. Isolation represents an impact on society because of how it can affect people’s brains. Without any communication and other skills that are important in day-to-day living, you will want to experience more and more isolation creating unhealthy living standards that lead to making a dystopia.

“Harrison Bergeron'' and Fahrenheit 451 use technological control to change people's thoughts and opinions about life, causing them to want to be isolated because of the fact of not having anything else to be there with them. In the book Fahrenheit 451 Mildred has seashell radios that fit in her ears like hearing aids or earplugs. In the book, it mentions, “And in her ears, the little Seashells, the thimble radios tamped tight, and an electronic ocean of sound.” (Bradbury, 12) This develops Mildred, as well as many other humans within society, antisocial and isolated because of the technological advances. The seashell radios in their ears will send out information to them that they could have found other ways but want people to know everything on their own and not have to get help from others to be able to find out this information that they are seeking. In the short story “Harrison Bergeron'', Kurt Vonnegut writes, “The television program was suddenly interrupted for a news bulletin. It wasn’t clear at first as to what the bulletin was about, since the announcer, like all announcers, had a serious speech impediment. For about half a minute, and in a state of high excitement, the announcer tried to say “ladies and gentlemen.” (Vonnegut, 3) In this text, everyone in their society has to wear an earpiece called the handicap. This causes each person to have their own disability that contributes to their everyday life that making it harder to be their own human. People know that there are rules to taking out their earpieces, and there are serious consequences that will get them in trouble if they do not follow these specific rules. Having overmuch isolation is going to impact the health and relationships of the characters because they will not have good, happy mindsets and make the dystopian society, a society that is undesirable and frightening. This dystopian element of government control and technological control contributes to maintaining technology play a role in society and how people can communicate with each other and have their isolation, meaning they will create metaphorical walls between one another. The book Fahrenheit 451 and the short story “Harrison Bergeron” Play a more critical role in how society gets impacted because in both of the stories they are required to wear a sort of electronic device in their ear that causes them to have less everyday social interaction with even their families. They will get brainwashed through these devices that will cause them to construct the walls in their brain to not be social among themselves. This interferes with their society because they will experience no connections with another human being.

Therefore, technology impacts society by distracting innocent people from their problems in an attempt at creating a better world where people create their own isolated worlds in their heads. In the real world, Humans are so often distracted by technology to realize what is happening just above their phones and other devices. Technology in the real world impacts us to create walls of isolation in between our friends and families that then leads to other factors of the world’s humanity including mental health, loss of relationships, and many other issues that technology may have a big impact on.
