“Throughout the world, countries are faced with a number of challenges.” In this essay, I will be discussing a certain social problem that is related to COVID-19 and propose solutions to said issue. This social issue is getting vaccinated.

In Grenada and many countries in the world, the COVID-19 vaccine is seen as a rushed vaccine. The general perception is that the vaccine contains low-quality medicine and some even believe contains nanochips that track you. Furthermore, usually the same people that think this do not follow proper COVID-19 protocols such as social distancing and wearing a mask. Currently in Grenada, 35% of the population has at least taken one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 30% is fully vaccinated. To achieve herd immunity, we will need at least 70% of Grenada’s population to be fully vaccinated. Sad to say, but the negative stigma against the COVID-19 vaccine only prolongs the pandemic.

How can we make people not be distrustful towards the COVID-19 vaccine? There is a lot of misconceptions about the vaccine. A simple solution to that is to debunk the false information spread in both social media and the words spoken by others. One prominent reason people distrust the vaccine is because of how seemingly quickly it was made.  Even though the World Health Organization (WHO) stated: “Unprecedented scientific collaborations have allowed COVID-19 vaccine research, development, and authorisations to be completed in record time – to meet the urgent need for COVID-19 vaccines while maintaining high safety standards.” In addition, there have been numerous statements about the testing done on the COVID-19 vaccine. The WHO also stated: “Before receiving validation from WHO and national regulatory agencies, COVID-19 vaccines must undergo rigorous testing in clinical trials to prove that they meet internationally agreed benchmarks for safety and effectiveness.” To combat false information being spread we must simply prove such information is untrue.

To combat the doubt about the COVID-19 vaccine, we will need to provide legitimate information that supports the vaccine. On social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram, there should be posts showing official research papers about the vaccine and be visible and pinned for all to see. In the physical world, we should do the same via flyers and Public Address Systems urging people to take the vaccine. Accurate information is needed for the public to trust the vaccine presenting the facts on social media and physically will help.

In conclusion, skepticism towards the COVID-19 vaccine in many countries will need to be dealt with. Rampant spreading of misinformation only stifles efforts to end the pandemic. What is to be done is to debunk said information and provide factual information so that trust I regained. To get more people vaccinated the above stated solutions will need to be adopted.
