The weather is getting warmer and the gardens are coming alive with bees, flies, butterflies and many other insects. For some of us, it is exciting to see these weird and wonderful creatures return. For others, it's a sign to contact the local bug spray companies to kill these insects. But you don't have to reach for the spray every time, as killing all insects and bugs is not always necessary or effective. People don't realize that insects play a huge role in the balance in our ecosystem. 

How can we expect there to be more plants and flowers around us, but we also expect less insects around us. According to gardeners, insects are the main reason for pollination, no insects; no plants. Many insects like beetles, wasps, bees, moths and butterflies help a lot in the process of pollination. They fly from one plant to another and transport pollen from one plant to another, speeding up the reproduction process. Studies have shown that if you plant in a closed place without insects, your plants will not reproduce at all. 

Insects are good for the environment, but did you know they are also good for you? Believe it or not, some insects like grasshoppers, crickets, and ants are eaten by people all over the world! A recent study shows that grasshoppers are highly recommended because they have been shown to have higher levels of omega-3s and protein than salmon and lean beef. Honey pot ants are actually ants that have a grape in the last part of their body that is full of sugary and healthy honey-like substances. Studies have shown that eating this grape replaces the need for caffeine intake.

To break down leaf litter and other organic waste, you need decomposers. You may be wondering who these decomposers are, well, they are insects. Insects like worms, rove beetles, flies, and cockroaches feed on dead organisms or rotten parts of things. Without them, there would be a lot more waste and rotten matter since they speed up the decomposition process. Studies have shown that when a human body is dead, the only way for it to decompose is for worms and other insects to eat its body. Cockroaches, on the other hand, feed mainly on rotten things. Entomologists have proven that when a cockroach dies and decomposes, it turns the rotting waste into powder that is actually full of protein and calcium that is super beneficial to plants.
