Every time you go swimming, or canoeing believe it or not you are doing these things in a watershed. Crazy right? In fact, we all live in a watershed. Before we get any further, let me explain to you what a watershed is. A watershed is an area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it collects into the same place. The water in your backyard drains over or under the ground to a small creek or pond and is a part of its watershed. Where does the rain in your backyard end up? The answer to this question is your watershed address, the drainage basin where you live.

Watersheds are very important for ecology. For example, watersheds provide places for many fish and animals to live and create a habitat for them. First of all, if the water is “impaired” that means that the water is not suitable for fish and animals to drink, swim in, or to consume the fish that were caught there. Therefore, that's why we need to keep watersheds clean. If watersheds aren’t clean, then the fish that live in there would die. If there were no fish, then the animals who eat fish would decrease because they wouldn’t have enough food.

Another reason why watersheds are very important is that wild animals depend on them for water. Without water, the animal population would decrease because they wouldn’t have enough water to drink. In conclusion, watersheds are vital for our ecology because they provide food, shelter, and a habitat for many animals.

Watersheds are very important to humans and society. For example, watersheds don’t only provide animals with water. It provides all of us with water too. Without water, we would not be able to survive. For instance, watersheds also provide people with jobs. Without watersheds, many people would not have a job and they would not be able to make money and buy food and things they need. Also, watersheds are great for our society because they make great tourist sites for people to come to see. They are also great for transportation. And I know you are probably thinking about how that can be so. Many places have to use boats to get from one place to another. And without watersheds, they wouldn’t be able to. In conclusion, watersheds are very important to humans and our society because they provide food, jobs, and tourism.

Here are a few ways that we can preserve watersheds for our future generations. First, we can start by conserving water. Yes, it’s as easy as that! We can start by taking shorter showers and reducing the amount of water we use in our daily lives. That means that you should try not to leave your faucet or shower on longer than you need it to be on. You don’t have to do much to save our watersheds, it’s as easy as that. We also need to make sure that we keep our watersheds clean, which means that you shouldn’t litter. We also can help preserve our watersheds by not using our cars as much. The oil from our cars usually ends up in the ocean or lakes and that has a big impact on watersheds. Maybe instead of driving you could ride your bike or go on a walk. In conclusion, all these ways are great ways to preserve our watersheds for our future generations.
