In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are “mockingbirds”, or people who are truly innocent and it would be a sin to do any harm to them as they have not done anything wrong. The mockingbird in the novel represents those who are innocent but are “touched by evil”, which is why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because it would be killing an innocent. The story of To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Maycomb, a town where a girl Scout lives with her brother Jem, and her father Atticus. The novel is told through the eyes of Scout and she describes the events that take place in her town including trying to know a man who is deemed monstrous by the town of Maycomb, but she realizes that he really is a mockingbird and everything she hears before is all gossip. Arthur “Boo” Radley is one of the main mockingbirds in the novel since he is misjudged by his entire town and seen as an unstable dangerous man when he is really a kind man who lost his innocence or “touched by evil”.

Boo Radley is a mockingbird who is protected by Sheriff Tate after he saves Scout and Jem from an unfortunate altercation between Bob Ewell and Atticus which results in Bob attacking Jem and Scout. After the quarrel, at the Finch’s home, Mr. Tate expresses how it would not be right to bring this occurrence to light and announces, “To my way of thinkin’, Mr. Finch, taking the one man who’s done you and this town a great service an’ draggin’ him with his shy way into the limelight--to me, that’s a sin.”(Lee 369)  Sheriff Tate understands that Boo Radley is innocent and has not done anything wrong and in fact only helps by saving Jem and Scout’s lives and he knows that it is a sin to do harm to someone that is innocent, even if he is responsible for Bob Ewell’s death.

Boo Radley is demonized by the townspeople and has rumors spread about him, but Miss Muadie knows the true Boo Radley so she stands up for him. Miss Maudie knows Boo so she tries to describe Boo’s history to Scout, “Miss Stephanie Crawford said some town council told Mr. Radley that if he didn’t take Boo back, Boo would die of mold from the damp. Besides, Boo could not live forever on the bounty of the county.” (Lee 14) Miss Maudie sympathizes for Boo because she knows that he is not like the gossip about him, he is just misunderstood and is depicted as evil in Maycomb.
