Norman O. Brown once said, “I am what is mine. Personality is the original personal property.” The above quotation suggests that our personalities are unique to us and us alone. Our personalities define who we are as people and can influence our behaviors and daily decisions. No one person has the same personality as someone else. If people were the same, no one would be original. The importance of individual personalities and the impact of our personalities on our careers is crucial for personal and career development. This paper serves the purpose of analyzing various personality types, different career options that fit these personality types, and strengths and weaknesses.

According to Dean R. Gehring (2007), Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs fashioned the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) in Carl Jung’s behavior research technique. (p.7) As such, my Myers Briggs Type Indicator results say I have an ENFJ (Extrovert 100%, Intuitive, 56%, Feeling 73%, and Judging 73%) personality type. I took this assessment in high school, and the results were the same. According to Sandra Duhe (2009), the MBTI aims to help all individuals learn more about themselves. (section Introduction and Rationale, para.4). It is crucial for management and other leaders to know about their personalities to lead others effectively.

However, the percentages of sociability versus shyness were slightly different the second time than the first time. Years ago, my rate of extroversion was 75%. My personality shifted as I matured both mentally and physically. I would argue most people’s personalities change when as they grow older. Our life experiences construct our personalities. Overall, I agree with the results of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. According to the ENFJ page, ENFJs are generous by nature and enjoy helping others. I also greatly appreciate volunteer work and helping others as often as I can.

Moreover, ENFJs are pleasant, entertaining, and like being the center of attention. I love attending large social gatherings and meeting new people. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused me to curtail the number of social events that I attend. Still, I nevertheless spend a significant amount of my free time socializing with friends and family over the phone. I also enjoy planning parties for both loved ones and acquaintances, especially birthday parties. Spontaneity is a common reoccurrence in my personal life, as I often feel inspired to do things at a moment’s notice.

In contrast, I struggle with being a pushover due to my overwhelming desire to help others. This personality flaw often leads to me becoming overwhelmed because I take on too many activities and charitable causes at one time. I often feel I must save the world, even though it is impossible to solve its problems singlehandedly. My inability to say no to others impacts my ability to do things I enjoy, like staying home and watching movies on Netflix. I sometimes suffer from insomnia because I am so stressed out about everything I must do. As a result, I am frequently exhausted, both mentally and physically.

Likewise, ENFJs are the extroverted cousins of INFJs. They are the people who often feel emotionally drained after attending social events. Their shyness may read as aloof or cold, but this is not usually the case. Like ENFJs, INFJ types also strive to make the world a better place, just like ENFJs do. They are idealists and view the physical world around them through rose-colored glasses. INFJs do not just sit around dreaming, however. They believe in activism and are physically involved with countless charitable causes and organizations that match their beliefs, not unlike their ENFJ counterparts. Both INFJs and ENFJs may have difficulty saying no to others and take on too many advocacy roles at once.

Simultaneously, ESFJs are socializers like ENFJs, so they enjoy planning and attending large gatherings for their loved ones. As extroverts, they enjoy making new friends and enjoy networking with colleagues.  They also have an overwhelming desire to care for their loved ones. ESFJs are incredibly outspoken about their beliefs and can be hypersensitive to apparent disapproval from others. This hypersensitivity causes them to develop irrational fears of the world around them.  Moreover, they are natural-born leaders and will expect others around them to be as zealous about social or environmental causes as they are.

ISFJs also feel an immense need to care for others, especially loved ones. They may feel such a strong need to provide for others that they very quickly could be taken advantage of by others. Like INFJs, they are introverted and usually need personal space after attending parties. They can also seem cold or aloof because of their shyness. On the contrary, ISFJs are fiercely loyal and will stick up for those they love.
