Waking up can be a difficult task for students and teachers alike. I believe that we should start our school earlier rather than later. This gives students and teachers the time to come into school with a clear mind.

According to the article Sleepless No More In Seattle — Later School Start Time Pays Off For Teens by Patti Neighmond on the first paragraph it states “As evidence grows that chronic sleep deprivation puts teens at risk for physical and mental health problems, there is increasing pressure on school districts around the country to consider a later start time.” The article states that with little sleep students are left with mental health problems and increasing pressure from their school. This can affect a students motive to work and can seriously affect their mental health. A student may be doing a sport or an after school activity which can be hard to balance with school work. This then causes them to stay up at much later times to work on work that was due. This causes a cycle in which the student doesn’t get enough sleep. This draws the students motives, mental and physical health away which in turn affects their life. “of 88 students taking the same biology classes. They also wore wrist activity monitors and kept a sleep diary. You might think that when school starts later, teens will just stay up later. But that's not what researchers found.” This statement proves that students with more sleep focus better and that if we increase the start times of school students won’t take advantage of it by staying up later.

“Thirty-four minutes of extra sleep each night is a huge impact to see from a single intervention," says de la Iglesia.”  This statement from the article shows that we can increase the time but we don’t necessarily need to increase it by a lot. This means that if we do increase the time then it won’t take a lot out of teaching or in school activities. The extra time can help students come in with a positive attitude, focus more, decrease their stress levels and more. The benefits of later start times outweigh the benefits of earlier start time.
