Having attention is a thrilling experience that many crave for. Mrs. Sappleton's niece had displayed this in the short story “The Open Window”. Vera acts like this towards Mr. Nuttel because she is desperate for recognition and awareness. She has conveyed this behavior since she may simply be bored, uses his clear anxiousness to her liking, and she just wants him to listen to her.

To start off, Vera is a young teenager who may just be bored. In the story it states: “…she judged that they had had sufficient silent communion.” This shows that Vera could tell that Mr. Nuttel was not a very talkative man, which she wanted to change. Due to this, Vera began to communicate with him in order to gain his attentiveness. Once she saw that he was intrigued by their conversation, she began to build up her story and act more and more to keep him invested.

Additionally, it is clear that Mr. Nuttel is a very shy and nervous person. In the beginning of the story his sister says: “ ‘you will bury yourself down there and not speak to a living soul, and your nerves will be worse than ever from moping.’ ” This reveals that Mr. Nuttel acting conservative and keeping to himself is not new to him. As Vera senses this, she takes advantage of his uncomfort. She begins to tell a story, which happens to be very dark and disturbing.

Furthermore, she starts forthcoming with complex emotions and exaggerated words. After her sham story, “She broke off with a little shudder. It was a relief to Framton when the aunt bustled into the room with a whirl of apologies for being late in making her appearance.” This exhibits that Vera’s strange behavior made him even more uncomfortable than he previously was, which satisfied her since she was able to gain attention from him.

In conclusion, Vera had made up a very meticulous story in order to get a reaction from Mr. Nuttel. Her plan had worked, so she was pleased with how he had given her what she wanted. Her devious and precise actions offer her proficiency in obtaining something she yearns for.
