The Party Control in 1984 Essay Example

Every government has laws that control their citizens; however, in George Orwell’s book 1984 people truly had no freedoms and were controlled in every aspect of life by the Party. The government is ran by a party that has limited the rights of their citizens. The party controls and takes away the people's thoughts, actions, and language. “The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power – pure power”, (O'Brien, 173). 

The Party has such strict control over their citizens that they created a new language. This language called newspeak was created with the intention of limiting the ability to express opinions. For example, the word plusgood replaces the word great or better. With the limitations of expressing oneself it eliminates the idea and thought of people rebelling against the party. “Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it”,( Syme, 35). Syme in this quote explains the whole meaning of newspeak and why the Party created a new language. Newspeak is found in many different examples like the party slogan The Party has so much control over the people of Oceania that they become blind to this type of propaganda. Newspeak is the way for the party to censor and control the expressions and opinions of people in Oceania. 

Also, the Party controls and limits the rights and actions of the peoples of 

Oceania. Unlike many other modern countries they do not have a certain set of laws, however they do have restrictions that people must follow. The Party's control is so dominant over these people that they don’t need laws, but instead they understand what is allowed and not allowed. For example, the citizens of Oceania could not have sex. The reason for this absurde restriction is so people stay loyal to the state. “ When you make love you’re using up energy; and afterwards you feel happy and don’t give a damn for anything. They can’t bear to feel like that,”( Julia, 133). The Party is not against the action itself, however the happy feeling afterwards. The Party's strict control over people's actions limits their emotions and thoughts.

Lastly , the Party has strict control over the peoples thoughts in Oceania. The Party dedicated a whole group of officers similar to the police to monitor and  punish anybody who commits a thoughtcrime. A thoughtcrime is when somebody thinks negatively or unorthodoxly that the Party does not agree with. The Party has banned many items that can lead to someone committing a thought crime like a journal which one of the characters bought. “ The thing that he was about to do was to open a diary. This was not illegal, but if detected it was reasonably certain that it would be punished by death, or at least by twenty- five years in a labor camp”, (Winston, 6). The Party's restrictions are so controlling that they cannot form their own opinions or think freely for themselves. This control over the citizens leads to many people despising the party and rebelling against the government. The control that the Party possesses over the thoughts of people is so powerful that it eliminates the idea of evolution or expanding. 

In George Orwell's book 1984 he tells the story of a controlling government and how the people deal with such strict control. This results in the people having no freedoms and not being able to control their thoughts, actions, or language they used. The citizens that experience the government's control barely live and aren't happy.
