Gun laws are a political issue that has for a long time been doing a lot more dividing than uniting and agreeing that the divide between us citizens who believe in stricter gun laws and people who oppose getting more and more divided. Gun law issues spike up such as Mexican drug trafficking organizations (DTOs) purchasing guns in the U.S because of the lenient regulations (Mehalko 299 ). This directly relates to the political influence of guns as it is not planned for DTOs to use the freedom America boasts to bear and own guns to terrible use yet it is happening. While many people understand that that’s a terrible thing yet they still point back to the second amendment rights that allow them to own and bear guns. Yet the same law that may affect U.S citizens is pointed to as the main problem for why the firearm-related homicides in the U.S were 18 times higher than that of Australia ( Kamal et al.) This issue is very important and needs to be looked into more.

The problem is in part due to the political dispute made between the opposing sides when it comes to gun control. When the topic of school shootings or DTOs buying guns in the U.S due to the leniency of the regulations (Mehalko 299). The argument of the 2nd amendment allows citizens of the United States the right to keep and bear arms (Sawchuck 1). This has been used as a direct response to any problem/dispute involving the use of firearms. But even so, the 2nd amendment remains a very hard point to dispute. Overtime laws have been pointing in the direction of showing the reasoning for the 2nd amendment to be without cause as the main purpose of the need to bear and keep arms is to protect in a matter of self-defense but Self-defense often is described as being innate, inalienable, and individual. But the Supreme Court has never expressly held self-defense to be a constitutional right. Instead, for most of American history, courts and commentators paired self-defense from criminal sanctions, plucked it from the common law, or sounded it from the penumbras of Due Process or the Ninth Amendment (Miller 1). The 2nd amendment loses all merit when self-defense is not considered a constitutional right which is why many times people have tried to fight the courts to declare the right. District of Columbia v. Heller is the closest the Court has come to stating that self-defense is a constitutional right. Heller held that the Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear an arm in the home for self-protection. The majority described individual self-defense as the “central component” of the Second Amendment (Miller 2). With all that in mind we are directed into the main issue at hand which is not that of self-defense but mainly Ordinary semi-automatic rifles, just like ordinary semi-automatic handguns, are protected by the second amendment's right to keep and bear arms. The U.S. Supreme Court’s legal precedents confirm the same. These constitutional protections do not dis- appear merely because the anti-gun lobby chooses to label—or perhaps, more accurately, mislabel—these ordinary firearms as “assault weapons” (Smith 2).

With all these issues in mind such as the issues of whether or not self-defense is a right for which the second amendment is necessary or whether the issue of DTOs using the guns, they acquire in the U.S. The main problem throughout all of this is the amount that the citizens of the U.S are how much they are being divided because of the problem gun rights cause and how split the stances are on the issue and while there are great points to be made for both sides of the topic due to the sensitivity the topic holds. Instead of the great points that can be made for each side yelling and arguments are becoming the only thing that is being heard which is doing a lot more harm to fixing the problem at hand which is gun control. Gun control doesn’t have an easy fix but it can still be worked on and should be worked on which needs the citizens of the U.S to unite and put the long history that gun control had in dividing and start aiming for unity in the problem. If gun control is not something that begins to be seriously addressed soon we will end up in a situation which when compared to our current situation will seem like a dystopian society. That is why the severity of the issue is so big and instead of the constant arguments unity is the solution.
