One of Disney’s first films centered around black culture is the Princess and the Frog! The Princess and the Frog was first released in December of 2009. Following its release, the movie grossed over $260,000,000 worldwide. Some may say the movie’s depiction of the black experience is inaccurate. One of Disney’s most highly underrated films is The Princess and the Frog.
There are twelve original Disney princesses. Affirmed by Disney Studios themselves, Tiana from The Princess and the Frog was the first and is the only African American princess. As author Melanie Weir writes, “The Princess and The Frog finally gave little black girls a princess who looked like them - and that type of representation has been proven to be very important for the development and self-esteem of young children” ( TheThings). Evidently, the introduction of Tiana had a great deal of impact on children from different backgrounds, especially in the African American community. Little black girls could finally look at a screen and see themselves in Tiana, she represented every black and brown girl around the world. With that influence on Tv, they would be inspired and would go to stores to buy princess toys that resembled them. Princess Tiana will forever have a revolutionary effect on the entertainment industry all over the world.
The Princess and the Frog has a great plot and an even better storyline. According to TheEverydayGeek, ”The Princess and the Frog is one of Disney's best movies. It has a great twist on a classic story, characters that made me care, and music that had me tapping my foot and wishing I was in New Orleans. The animation is so beautiful that I almost cried at the beginning of the film.” (IMDb). The author inferred how much influence the movie had on New Orleans culture at the time. Furthermore, The film introduces many iconic characters including Ray (Raymond), Charlotte La Bouff and Louis the trumpet-playing alligator. The author goes as far as to say that the film was one of the best films of the year in 2009.
Tiana is a marvelous princess. Julie Washington remarks, “...Tiana is a worthy Disney princess. Hardworking, resourceful, confident, this is one chick who doesn't need rescuing” (Cleveland.com). Tiana is one of the only princesses who wasn’t destined to be a princess. From a young age, her dreams were to open up a restaurant of her own. It was only at the end of the movie that she became an actual princess by marrying Prince Naveen. She had goals, which she achieved, beyond finding a prince charming, many aspirations, and believed that success was achieved through hard work. Tiana is an inspiration and a role model to little girls everywhere, as well as adults.
One of the most underrated Disney movies is The Princess and the Frog. Although it is a children's movie, the themes expressed are far from childish. Many can learn a considerable amount of those lessons from this film.
