One specific weight loss program tested their results with the opinions of others who tried the program. They gained feedback and noticed one thing in particular. They noticed that most people thought the program was boring and didn’t want to move on with it. A 32-year-old woman who tried the program stated “I lost 20 kilos in three months, I did not eat, I just drank coffee and smoked cigarettes...and when I started eating my body just craved for more food and then I started getting fat and gained 40 kilos.” This woman in particular was found stranded in what to lose weight to the point she thought that starving herself was the answer. In her mind she was drawing out a plan that the less she eats, the more weight she would lose. In the mind that sounds like a good idea, but turned out to be a bad idea. As people around the world know the term “dieting” they think of healthy foods and exercise. A more efficient and healthier lifestyle. This is correct, but along comes the term “Anorexia.” Anorexia is the loss of appetite, usually someone that is unhealthily skinny. That is what starving the human body would result in and some can’t handle the hunger and go on a “binge” eating plan. This is where people stuff their faces until they can’t eat anymore. As this is related to a mental state of behavior, it can be avoided. “All behavior change requires modifying some habits.” (A). A study found that “Replacement Activities” (A) help people become more motivated and have them more intrigued to lose weight than having people think that it's going to be a long miserable journey.
Dieting simply resulted in an unhealthy gain of weight and a feeling of failure. A 29-year-old woman stated, “I think it is about habits and there are so many. When I look at my daily life there are so many habits I need to change to reach the goal and I think it is not realistic to do it all at once.” Human mentality controls everything people do. If people can learn to control their cravings of wanting more food to eat, exercise, and control diet, people suffering from obesity would most likely get what they want with their weight. A study shows “childhood trauma, neglect, abuse, food insecurity, and posttraumatic stress disorder often proceed lifelong severe obesity, and pose challenges to treatment.”(I). Also found with this, it was discovered that obesity is common comorbidity when it comes to obesity. Self-control is the main factor when it comes to controlling obesity. A movement called “PATHS” was designed to help children understand their emotions and other people's emotions. This was to help children understand and control their feelings and thoughts to prevent the slightest outbreak of obesity, and suicide.
Obesity increases the risk of developing type two diabetes, heart disease,
and stroke. In the long run, programs that are helping prevent obesity are also helping health issues that occur later in the obesity occurrence.
Obesity carries on many “effects” on the people and has certain drawbacks. “...people with obesity are characterized as lazy, self-indulgent and greedy.” (A). This is more of a stereotype of obese persons. “Obese persons may be more prone to depression, stress, eating disorders and low self-esteem due to disorientation of their body shape.” (F). People suffering from obesity let the fact that they are “fat” get into their heads. Their mind is telling them all sorts of judgemental things. The mental state of mind allows the brain to think what it feels basic. Obese persons feel that they are always being judged and stared at for their disorder. This also increases negative feelings about oneself. Along with many drawbacks to obesity and article states, “The risk of developing depression, these people have a 58% risk of obesity” (F). Depression is a mental disorder. Obesity falls right along with it. Mental health does play a major role in the obesity issue, but so do social relationships. Unhealthy relationships with friends, family, and other people may result in obesity. An example can come from depression. Theoretically speaking, if a friend betrays someone and that person gets very upset, they are going to lose their self-control. This may result in obsessive eating and other things such as suicide. This is another mental issue.
There are many ways to stop the spread of obesity. One way is to limit portion sizes. Portion sizes at restaurants and fast food areas can be overwhelming, but the only person that can control this is the person that orders or decides how much of something they want. “Sugar is a deeply consequential pathway to obesity” (D). Sugar is one of the main contestants that contribute to the effect of obesity. Sugar is unhealthy for the human body but tastes good to most people. Cutting sugar production is the easiest solution to this problem but is not the most effective. “Major links between SSB and weight gain, resulting in diabetes, cancers and cardiovascular disease” (D). SSB’s stand for sugar-sweetened beverages. So typically Pepsi and coca-cola. These drinks are pretty much sold everywhere and are the consumers' choice if they want to buy them or not. Most people want soda because it tastes better than water and can wake them up in the morning like coffee. These drinks are constantly drunk and are influencing the body in a very unhealthy way. Marketing comes along with obesity as well. Children and adolescents are surrounded by sugary things in ads, games, and television.
