One major topic discussed lately and over the past decades is immigration into the U.S. It is said that many of the people migrating to the United States come in search of a better life emigrating from their current countries. The result is an overpopulation in the U.S. creating major overflow and also new conflicts to deal with. keep the borders open for those seeking a better life while also including new laws that prevent furthermore illegal traffic in the incoming future.

Keeping the borders open while being more strict on what goes in and what goes out would be a good idea. The idea of immigration is not bad however the way the United States sees it is. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also known as ICE handles the situation without remorse. Furthermore, they keep the detained immigrants in cages not allowing them to see their families. “Depending on their design, have been derided by migrants as “la hielera” (“the icebox”) or “la perrera” (“the dog kennel”) due to the cold, cramped conditions inside”(Washington post). Not only is it cold and cramped inside, kids have died from the cages. A migrant  stated that “several children have died after being taken into federal custody in the past year”. The issue can also be linked to money problems that could cause repercussions. The U.S has spent billions of dollars in building the wall while president Donald Trump was in office. “The price tag for President Trump's border wall has topped $11 billion — or nearly $20 million a mile — to become the most expensive wall of its kind anywhere in the world”(npr). Since already the U.S is 28 trillion dollars in debt we couldn’t possibly afford to build such a big project for the reason to stop immigrants from coming in. ICE has already been increasing the security and agents since the coming time with an “increase from 9,000 agents in 2001 to 20,000 in 2009, costing an estimated $4 billion annually.”(gale). Although it seems like a good idea, this wouldn’t stop the illegal trafficking due to rapid adaptation to problems like this.

Some people say that with the rapid increase in immigration came a huge increase in drug trade. Since the migration of many illegal aliens to the US became a major topic to be discussed about ,also came the increase of drug trade. “The drug trade in illegal drugs began reaching epidemic ‘proportions during the 1990’s. Scholars have estimated that profits from international drug trafficking were nearing $10 trillion dollars annually by the twenty-first century.”(immigration to the United States). The drug trade started getting worse in the 1990’s with many of the drugs getting here by crossing the border from Mexico that have been sent and brought from the Mexican Cartels. Even though the problem continues to rise it is something the US can not resolve on its own. Furthermore, we should hold accountable the bordering countries that do absolutely nothing to stop the drug trade from happening. The weak governing system of Mexico makes things possible for drug cartels to take over in the years to come. The United States is just handling all the pressure that the neighboring countries fail to maintain.

After completing this assignment I gained a better understanding of the two different sides of immigration including the facts around it. However, it will continue to increase in the problems the US has if we as the people do not step up and speak out for each other. To all the citizens of the US, I encourage you to do what is right and speak out for those who have no voice in this modern problem because only if we all unite as one we have a chance to make things how they are supposed to be.
