The Reality of the U.S.-Mexico Border (Essay Example)

Some may believe or be in denial that the U.S.-Mexico border has never been in crisis and is still in crisis to this day. As the Southern border situation evolves, there has been much controversy surrounding the methods of a solution to this crisis. However, the U.S. is at an all-time high of immigrants coming to the border, which those immigrants consist of families in hope of a better future, and many policies can be modified or removed to aid these families. Therefore, the United States must create a solution for these families that are in need of opportunities.

The pathway to citizenship has never been easy for immigrants, it is very difficult when in a new country, with new people, and a new language. The path consists of unimaginable requirements along with being a permanent resident for 5 years, with the luck of never being deported in that time. The U.S. has tried many methods to reduce the encounters at the border, including the Trump administration to “separate children from their parents as a lesson” to other immigrants that may decide to follow their actions (Document A). These immigrants are pursuing a greater future for their children to thrive and become successful individuals, whereas Mexico cannot provide this.

The encounters at the border are at an all-time high, coming in at over 1.6 million immigrants from all borders into the United States. Many assume that the word “immigrant” majorly represents Mexican immigrants. In reality, nearly 63% of immigrants are “people from countries other than Mexico” even when Mexico is the most publicized country for their immigrants (Document B). When these immigrants do come to America and are caught, they are either faced with “expulsion or apprehension” which will determine how quickly they are returned to their country(Document A). These apprehensions are where children are kept while waiting for the government to trace their parents back in Mexico. It can take days to several months to find these children’s relatives to send them back to Mexico. With the encounters at the U.S. border so high, the correct way to fix this may be controversial.

There have been numerous disputes on whether or not the government has been “too easy” on immigrants trying to come over to the United States. Many claim that the people of Mexico are bringing in “drug cartels and human traffickers … and American and immigrant lives are at greater risk” because of Mexicans (Document C). Not only is that untrue, but it is also dehumanizing to assume all people of one ethnicity are contributing to a repulsive reputation. It is unfair for legal immigrants from Mexico to be judged and assumed they are associated with drugs or trafficking.

As a society from the United States of America, we should be more grateful that we are in this country. Many many many people wish they could be in the United States for three reasons: freedom, equality, and opportunity. This is what the U.S. is built from, the ground to this beautiful country all people aspire to be. The U.S. Border and the government must be more understanding for these families that are just seeking a better life.
