Many factors played a part in the USA’s rapid expansion. These included the Civil War, population growth, transport developments and technological and business innovations. However, I think the most important factor that brought about the rapid expansion of the American economy was corporations and trusts.

Immigration can be seen as a cause of economic growth as during 1870s about 2.8million moved to the USA for a better standard of living. This helped economic growth as they provided a cheap labour force needed for the industrial revolution. Moreover, as consumers, they led to increased coal, clothing, and food demand. However, I think that corporations and trusts were the main reason for the rapid expansion of the American economy as it was encouraged by new business methods. The late nineteenth century brought big businesses and giant corporations to control the American economy, forcing the average consumer to pay high prices for the things they needed on a regular basis. This was due to corporations, for example, they could own multiple businesses and hire the exact management they wanted. Furthermore, they could buy, sell, and own properties, as well as take over more businesses. Therefore, showing how corporations and trusts was the most important reason for the rapid expansion of the American economy in 1870 and 1900.

Another factor which brought about the rapid expansion of the American economy was transport. Transport had evolved, especially railroads. They provided fast and efficient transport which meant that the transport of raw materials such as coal would be transported more rapidly. This would allow more goods to be transported, expanding American economy. They also employed around 1 million workers by 1900, all of whom were consumers. Therefore, showing how transport had a part in the rapid expansion of the American economy.

Another factor which brought about the rapid expansion of the American economy was the availability of land. Because the USA expanded, it created a market for manufacturing products and encouraged more railroad development. There was a great deal of fertile land in the region which caused mass production of wheat, ensuring the growth of agriculture and the food supply for the growing population, especially in the growing industrial cities. Therefore, showing how availability of land had a part in the rapid expansion of the American economy in 1870 and 1900.

In conclusion, in 1870 and 1900 America’s economy was rapidly increasing. This was mainly due to the corporations and trusts being able to own a number of businesses and having control in their industry.
