In our daily lives, we surprisingly get met by fears. In the stories, Life Doesn’t Frighten Me and The Ravine the main characters and speakers have fears and I am going to talk about the differences and similarities in them and the stories. In detail, the setting, the main character / speaker, and how they overcame their fears.

The setting in The Ravine and Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is different because one is more scary and the other is in a person’s mind. In The Ravine, the setting is a ravine where a boy named Butchie died. And the setting in Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is the speaker’s mind. The setting is similar because they are both places where there can be fear. For example, someone’s mind can be scary because imagination can create any kind of monster. Like how the speaker would say “Big ghosts in a cloud'' and “Dragons breathing flame.” And a ravine can be pretty scary. It can be scary because it’s where a boy named Butchie died. The evidence is when the narrator stated “When Vinny and the three others dropped down into theravine they entered a jungle with tangled trees and rumors of what might have happened to the dead boy’s body.”

The main character / speaker is different because one is more indecisive and the other one is more attentive. Like Vinnie the main character for The Ravine is always thinking about jumping then changes his mind and when he is on the ledge doesn’t jump. And the speaker in Life Doesn’t Frighten Me she never gives up and keeps on reassuring herself in her mind. The main character/ speaker is similar because both want to get out of the fear. For example Vinny’s mind said “Vinny thought he heard a voice, small and distant. Yes. Something inside him, a tiny voice pleading, Don’t do it. Walk away. Just turn and go and walk back down.” And when the speaker says “And listen for my scream,  If I’m afraid at all It’s only in my dreams. I’ve got a magic charm That I keep up my sleeve, I can walk the ocean floor And never have to breathe. Life doesn’t frighten me at all Not at all. Life doesn’t frighten me at all.”

They overcame their fears differently because one found peace by not doing something they were pressured to and one by repeating their fear till they got reassured. Like how Vinny and his friends always were pressuring him to jump off a ravine and when he was on the top of it he decided not to jump and found peace. And how the speaker had a lot of fears and kept saying life doesn’t frighten me at all and felt confident and didn’t feel so bad about her fears. They overcame their fears similarly because they both were really afraid of something but ended up reassured and peaceful. For example, Vinny was afraid to jump off the ravine but in the end he found peace by not jumping and also realized how beautiful the ravine is and how scary it isn't scary. The evidence is “The dead boy had jumped and had never come back up. Four search and rescue divers hunted for two days straight and never found him. Not a trace. Gave Vinny the creeps.” And how Vinny’s mind said “Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! But deep inside, where the peace was, where his mind wasn’t, he would not jump. He would walk back down.” And in Life Doesn’t Frighten Me the speaker also came over her fears even though she had multiple of them. For example, “Shadows on the wall, Noises down the hall, Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” And also at the end when the speaker said “ I’ve got a magic charm That I keep up my sleeve, I can walk the ocean floor And never have to breathe.

In life, we surprisingly get hit by fears. In Life Doesn’t Frighten Me and The Ravine have fears and I have typed the differences and similarities. They are similar and different in the main character / speaker, how they overcame their fear, and the setting. The main character / speaker are similar because they both want to get over the fear but they are different because Vinny is more indecisive and the speaker is attentive. Their setting is different because one is in someone’s mind and the other is in a ravine but it’s similar because they are both scary. The way they overcome fear is different because one found they didn't do something they were pressured to and the other repeated their fears until they felt reassured but they are similar because they both overcame their fears. Just know if you have fears, always be confident and attentive and go face your fear.
