Walter Dean Myers's story, "The Treasure of Lemon Brown '' is about a teenager named Greg who gets a valuable life lesson, a "treasure", from an unexpected person. Greg meets a homeless man named Lemon Brown, who has a very big impact on his life. What Lemon shows him is the true meaning of life. This lesson also changes Greg for the better. The story asks the reader, "Have you ever had a super caring person that wanted to give someone valuable advice?" In ‘’The Treasure of Lemon Brown,’’ Lemon Brown's lesson for Greg is that family is more important than anything else. Greg learned to be humble from Lemon Brown through his important lessons and lectures that taught Greg to keep in shape and change.

Greg learned to be humble and work hard threw Lemon Brown and the important lessons and lectures that keep Greg in shape and change him. On page 13, "it seems as if the narrator is talking about how made money just for his wife's use to travel around and make money to feed my wife and Jessie, my boy. Used to feed them well, too. I did not have anything except my boy's name. Used to feed them good, too …..I did not have anything to give him except these things that told him and who I was, and what he come from´'´´ .‘’What this shows in the lesson is that Lemon Brown tells Greg he needs to be wise and strong enough to recognize and meet his obligations. Another example is On page 13 ‘’course by then I was not as much as I used to be, not without somebody to make it worth the while." What this quote shows is Lemon Brown used to be independent and shows that Lemon Brown was motivated by family, and had little given to him. On page 13 ‘’They told of Sweet Lemon Brown, a blues singer and harmonica player who was appearing at different theaters in the south. One of the clippings said that Lemon Brown had been the hit of the shows fifty years ago.’ This shows that having a job and having compassion for others are very important. Having a job is one of the first steps to being an independent adult to assume responsibility for oneself and hopefully others.

Greg learned to be humble and work hard by adopting the attitude and behavior of his father. On page six, "his father had been a postal worker for all Greg's life and was proud of it; he had to work to pass the test". This is why Greg's father wants the best for Greg. Also, his father wants Greg to be diligent and never be lazy. However, that is not what Greg is seeing on page 14 .‘’He's carrying it around with him as he told me it meant something to him. That was my treasure and when I gave it to him." What this clearly shows is how much his father loves him. Sometimes family can be the ones that hurt you the most. But at the same time, they want the best for you and only the best. Greg's father does not have the same experience. It says on page 4 "Report cards was due in a week and Greg had been hoping for the best. But the principal had ended the suspense early when she sent a letter saying Greg would probably fail math if he did not spend more time studying. Do you want to play basketball? His father’s brown knitted over deep-brown eyes. That must be some kind of joke. This quote shows how Greg's father wants Greg to be more diligent and sharp in the future. The reason is that education is the base of success. Greg's father yelled at Greg due to his grades. That humbled Greg.
