What is the Tulsa Race Massacre you may be thinking? Well, the Tulsa Race Massacre isn’t something normally talked about.The Tulsa Race Massacre all began on May 31, 1921 between June 1, 1921. Angry mobs of white residents attacked black residents in Greenwood district in Tulsa, Oklahoma.The rumor was that 19-year-old Dick Rowland, a Black shoe shiner, had assaulted Sarah Page, the 17-year-old a white elevator operator in the nearby Drexel Building.The whole Tulsa Race Massacre was important but there were three main points.

Before the Tulsa race massacre Greenwood was a Black thriving community.According to The Washington post Before the Tulsa Race Massacre, “Greenwood had a population of more than 100,000 black people. It was home to luxury shops, restaurants,  grocery stores, a hospital, a savings and loan, a post office, three hotels, jewelry and clothing stores, two movie theaters, a library, pool halls, a bus and cab service, a nationally recognized school system, six private airplanes and two black newspapers.” This shows that Greenwood had some type of success and that it was a thriving black community.As written, Greenwood was very different before the Tulsa Race Massacre occurred. 

During the Tulsa race massacre mobs of white residents attacked Black residents and destroyed homes and businesses of the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, US. City officials even supplied the white residents with weapons and other items that they used to attack the Black residents of Greenwood.Between 75-300 people were killed most of them were black.Reports estimate the community had more than 10,000 African American residents, and most of them were thriving. Greenwood was  affected during the Tulsa Race Massacre.

After the Tulsa race massacre many were left homeless and there was a lot of damaged property.Many more were injured and more than 5,000 people were left homeless due to the Tulsa race massacre. After the Tulsa Race Massacre, many residents had promised to rebuild after the destruction the massacre had made.In ten years after the massacre, surviving residents who chose to remain in Tulsa rebuilt much of the district.The Tulsa race massacre lasted about 2 days. Greenwood was rebuilt and is now known as “The Black wall street of America”.This was how the Greenwood people were affected by the Tulsa Race Massacre.
