The United States Government System Essay Sample

America led the world as an economic and military superpower in the twentieth century.  America fought in the first two world wars as part of the Allies. By the time the wars were over, the American army was beaten down, but they were still eager to fight after the second world war; their goal was to join in hot conflicts during the cold war to preserve democracy. They were able to protect democracy by fighting against the communist territories.  Russia was expanding through Europe. The United States felt like it had to be the world’s babysitter; whenever there was a conflict, the United States intervened. 

In reality, the United States was no better socially or politically than most of the other countries it fought. Leading into the 20th century, the United States had its problems with social and economic issues such as racism and labor exploitation. Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt shared the belief and ideal that the United States should stay out of foreign conflicts that do not directly concern them. The following president did not share the same concern and was eager to babysit the world and “defend” against communism. As a result, the United States people disagreed with joining the Vietnam war. 

In the second world war, we were not much different than the Germans in terms of Internment camps. These camps were exclusively Japanese immigrants and Japanese Americans. At the time, all the Japanese Americans coming through San Francisco were immediately taken into the internment camps; although we did not harm them, they were brutally worked. The conditions were terrible, and internment camp survivor Ted Nakashima stated, “The food and sanitation problems are the worst. We have had absolutely no fresh meat, vegetables or butter since we came here (Nakashima 1)”.

 These individuals had done nothing wrong, were working members of society, and were shoved into these camps like cattle in a corral. They put them into the camps because of the way they looked, no other reason. Nakashima points out in his article that “Thousands of men and women in these camps,  energetic, quick, alert,  eager for hard, constructive work, waiting for the army to do something for us, an army that won’t give us butter. (Nakashima 2)”. Unfortunately, the very country these people trusted betrayed them. The Japanese came to America for a new and free life but got captured at the gates.

 This is a prime example of The United States needing to check its moral values and solve its problems with racism first before intervening in other affairs.  The Americans in these camps were not enemies of the states; they were Americans trying to get a new life; as stated by Ted Nakashima, “Japs” are the guys we are fighting. We’re on this site and we want to help. Why won’t America let us?(Nakashima 1).” The American government was “defending democracy” while using dictatorial powers to put a whole group of people in jail. They were being hypocritical in their own beliefs and statements.

The people and the leaders of the United States know we have our problems. The severe problem and debate are how to deal with such issues as taxes, abortions, and gun violence. Roosevelt believed “...a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed. (Roosevelt 1)” To this day, this bill has been unpassed and will most likely never be passed. The Bill of Rights and the constitution need to be reformed. The United States, for the past eight years, has been at each other’s throats; the two political parties have gone to pieces as we get more and more divided. The politicians on both sides want nothing but chaos. When a bill could be passed for all, not just democrat or republican, one of the sides still will shut it down just because the opposing party thought of it and wants it passed. Politics has become less and less about the people of the United States and all about the two opposing sides trying to fight out the other side. 

The United States and the people within the country need to get away from the two political parties and branch out so that individuals in between the two parties could also have a voice. The Sharon statement states, “In this time of moral and political crisis, it is the responsibility of the youth of  America to affirm certain eternal truths. (Stanton 1)” The youth of America in the future. The youth of America will eventually run the country. They will be the ones making the wiser choices.  The youth are the future of America and need to take action, change America,  and change our country for the better. They need to come together and change the flaws in our party system. We need to have minimal government regulations to ensure people have the means to live, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. With minimal government control, the people of the United States will be able to make their own decisions, precisely like our constitution said.

A major issue is our government uses “preserving” democracy as an excuse to boost global economics and support countries financially that do not share the same social and economic freedom that people of the United States have. For example, Naomi Klien states, “Unfortunately, investors have proven themselves all too willing to support oppressive monarchies like  Saudi  Arabia,  or  Communist authoritarianism in China, as long as these regimes crack open markets to foreign companies. In the race for cheap labour and precious natural resources,  pro-democracy movements are often trampled. (Klien 1)” As a society and government, we cannot continue using the excuse of “preserving democracy” when we exploit countries that don’t believe in democracy and personal freedoms. We force democracy on other countries, considering that isn’t even democracy.  We need to stop pretending we are the best and focus on our economy and social issues before telling others to change their ways.

America is a great country, but it is not without its faults. Going into the twenty-first century, Americans and especially American youth need to join together and create a new party of open-minded middle ground people. If we could have just one more party that shared beliefs from both the right and left, we could accomplish much more. We need to stop babysitting other countries and supplying them with goods and services when we cannot provide for our people. As Americans, we need to hold our government responsible and call it out. 

We can use our voice to protest what we think is right and wrong in our government with protests. The government neglects its people, and they don’t consider their citizens. The United States government is heavily flawed, and as a result, it causes more problems for American citizens that are not needed.  The youth of America are the only ones who would fix this flawed party system.
