As commonly described, friendship is the relationship of mutual affection between people. In “Of mice and men”, John Steinbeck redefined the word “friendship” by emphasizing some of the character’s actions throughout the story. The author describes friendship more as a complementary trait between people than mutual affection. There are numerous examples of actions that would support the idea the author tries to convey about friendship but George and Lennie (the main characters) have had some key moments in various cite in the story: Weed, and in the aftermath of Curly wife’s death. The friendship or love each George and Lennie have towards one another had a major impact on their decision and actions taken in those times.

Weed was the last town George and Lennie were in before setting themselves upon their journey towards their dream. They deserted the town because Lennie got in trouble for supposedly “raping” a girl in a red dress. The action George took after the incident showed on what terms their friendship was based on: mutual aid. George could’ve let Lennie deal with his problems but he felt the need to be accountable for and consequently decided to leave town to support Lennie. This sequence of events supports the author’s idea of friendship since George took the decision to assist Lennie. Without friendship, The story would’ve most likely taken another turn.

After the accidental murder of Curly’s wife, Lennie decided to run away and hide at the meeting spot set between him and George. George sees no other solution than to killing Lennie to protect him from himself and the troubles he would’ve produced more. George’s motives were fueled by love and consideration of his friendship with Lennie. He did what the people close to him saw as “what he had to do”. George decided to rescue Lennie from himself supports the idea of friendship being a complementary trait between them.

In closing, “Of mice and men” by John Steinbeck is a story written and published in 1937. This one reflects various conflicts, cultures, and beliefs of that time which causes the readers to come up with multiples yet different themes when writing about it. Friendship, as being part of the main themes, is showcased throughout the entire story and affects most of the character’s decisions before making an action. Although, George and Lennie’s friendship is quite different as it shows how the author tries to give a new meaning to this common word. George and Lennie complete each other. Furthermore, their bond is shown in various ways and places in the story (Weed, Curly wife’s death.)
