Highs and lows are a natural experience, whether it be about school, work, or family, it’s different for everyone. But, most people will experience a journey of highs and lows in their relationships. In literature, writers often explore deep relationships to teach lessons about life’s highs and lows. In Edgar Allen Poe’s “Annabel Lee,” the speaker shows that true love never dies. Figurative language helps to reveal the lesson learned from life’s highs and lows by enhancing the reader's emotional understanding throughout the most important of relationships.

In “Annabel Lee,” the speaker goes through a journey of emotions, telling the story of his and Annabel Lee’s love. Later, stating her tragic and mysterious death, of which he is heartbroken by. The speaker then proceeds to continue loving Annabel Lee, even after her passing, never letting go of their love. For example, he uses alliteration, as well as hyperbole in a couple of his lines, to express his ongoing love for Annabel Lee, “Can ever dissever my soul from the soul/Of the beautiful Annabel Lee”. The use of the word dissever exaggerates the idea of cutting or ripping apart their two souls, deepening the meaning. The alliteration demonstrated in these lines enhances the read, rather than using a simpler version of the statement. Likewise, he later writes, “For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams/Of the beautiful Annabel Lee”. This second example of alliteration represents that even after his lover's death, he still thinks about her whenever the moon shines. Because his love for Annabel Lee will never die, neither will his feelings and memories of her. The speaker ends the poem with, “And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side/Of my darling-my darling-my life and my bride”. This alliteration displays a more meaningful line with the usage of  non-everyday words, as well as rhymes.

The figurative language used in “Annabel Lee” helps to display a deeper understanding of the emotions we experience when dealing with love and loss. The speaker in “Annabel Lee,” expresses his strong feelings of love for his beloved Annabel Lee, when they were just children, adults, and eventually after her passing. After her tragic death, the speaker can’t help but think about Annabel Lee, recalling all of their fond memories together, and letting everything remind him of her. He uses figurative language, to express the real level of the love he has and forever will have of her. By learning about and dealing with love and loss, all of us can better understand one’s emotions, as well as our own, deciding who we wish to become in life.
