Theme of Racism in Indian Horse Movie (Essay Example)

In the movie ‘Indian Horse’ Saul experiences racism after he goes to a residential school because of his grandmother’s death. He shows great talent in hockey and gets scouted into a hockey team. However, he eventually gives up his career because of his trauma at the residential school. Saul experienced racism in residential school and during his whole life, and it’s still happening today.

First of all, I’ll talk about the racism that Saul experienced in his residential school. Whenever someone didn’t eat the food that nuns gave them, the nuns punished them by forcing the children to eat the food or shoving the food in their mouths. Next, Saul got raped by one of the nuns who were nice to him, which makes it more shocking. It didn’t show the specific part where he was getting abused, but it did tell it in the movie. Lastly, if a student gave a wrong answer during class or talked in their native language, they would get punished in multiple different ways, such as getting whipped a couple of times, standing in the corner without speaking, and more. Saul shouldn’t have gone through those experiences no matter what, and he deserves better.

Additionally, I’ll talk about the racism that Saul experienced during his hockey career. First, as he started his hockey career, he got insulted in a hockey match just because he was Indigenous. People threw stuff at Saul and his team even though they didn’t do anything wrong. Plus, the team they were playing against plays very aggressively and tries to hurt them during the game. Next, when they were just trying to drink at the bar after the match, a bunch of people beat them up and injured them, just because they were Indigenous. They told them that you need to earn your seat, which wasn’t even fair. Saul and his team couldn’t even have a drink at the bar, and that’s stupid. Lastly, when Saul gets scouted to the other team, even his teammates are racist to him, unlike his previous team, where everyone was like brothers of his and were very nice. The fact that he didn’t enjoy his dream career is very wrong.

Finally, I’ll talk about the racism that is still happening now. Some of the racism that is still happening in real life is the lack of water supplies for Indigenous people, which shouldn’t be happening because we’re all humans, and no race is better than others. Next, the government only funds a few people who got abused in the residential school, and depending on what kind of abuse people experienced, they give different amounts of money. I don’t think giving money can fix everything, and I don’t think really anything can fix the abuse they went through. However, I think the best government can do is to support it in every way they can, and also focus on making it stop. Lastly, they still have to face the trauma which they went through, and I think that would cause a lot of pain, or even suicide in worst cases. They might experience racism again, and that will remind them of residential schools, and the worst thing is that there’s not much that people can do about this.

It is easy to see racism occurring multiple times during Saul’s life. He experiences racism at the residential school, where one of the people there sexually abused Saul. He also experienced racism during his hockey career, where he eventually ended up stopping playing hockey because of the racism. Finally, the racism that is currently happening now, like the lack of water supplies, should stop. I think that the racism toward the Indigenous people should stop, and people like Saul shouldn’t deserve any of the struggles they went through.
