Over many years, racism has been a disgusting, horrible issue in our world. Racism still exists today, although it is not as bad as it once was. The classic novel of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry describes the difficulties the Logan family endures for being black.  Mildred D. Taylor brings to light the issue of racism by the victimization of the Berry family and Sam Tatum by the KKK, as well as an encounter with more unfair people at the Wallace store.

The Berry’s burning is a huge act of racism. Mr. Berry was talking to a white woman. Then a man saw them talking, and thought it was weird for a black man to be talking to a white woman. After Mr. Berry was done talking, he headed to his car to go home. Mr. Berry stopped at his friend's house as he was running low on gas. While exiting his car he was jumped by the KKK. The KKK poured hot tar on him and feathered him.Cassie also had some experiences of racism in Strawberry.

Cassie's time at Strawberry was not pleasant. T.J.'s family needed some goods, so Cassie, Stacy, and T.J. went to Jim Lee Barnett Mercantile. Mr. Barnett was assisting the children when a white woman entered. Mr. Barnett left everything he was doing to help the kids and went to aid the woman, despite the fact that the kids came first. As a result, Cassie becomes enraged and complains to Mr. Barnett. Mr. Barnett then ejects Cassie from the store. That was Cassie's first encounter with racism in Strawberry, and probably in her whole life. The following act of racism took place on Strawberry Street. Cassie was minding her own business when she was bumped into by Lillian Jean. Lillian Jean, blamed Cassie for the disaster, despite the fact that she had nothing to do with it. Cassie was forced to apologize to Lillian Jean, but she refused. So Lillian Jean made her father convince her that she needed to apologize only because Cassie was there. The KKK, as well as the Wallace shop, play a significant role in this racism. Some people might say that these acts of racism aren’t the most outstanding. I believe they are because it shows how random white people used to attack black people for something so minor, like talking to a white woman, or for just walking on the same side of the sidewalk as them.

The Wallace store is not a safe location for children to visit. Papa forbids the children from visiting the Wallace store because the Wallaces are KKK members and the children there are inebriated. Because the children are African-American, the KKK may have hurt or possibly killed them. That is why Papa forbids the kids from going there. This is yet another instance of racism. Just because African-American children go to a Caucasian store, they are killed or harmed.

In my opinion, Mildred D. Taylor does an excellent job of showing how badly black people were treated a while ago. It shows just how much we have changed.
