The three branches of government are what make up our central government. There are the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The entire system is essential because the branches protect the freedom and rights of the people and create a fine balancing act that promotes a democratic society. To ensure the government is effective each branch has its own powers and responsibilities, including working with the other branches.

The legislative branch is in charge of creating the laws. It is made up of the house of representatives and the senate. The house of representatives consists of 435 elected members divided among the 50 states in proportion to their total population. The senate is composed of 100 senators, 2 from each state.

The executive branch carries out and enforces the laws made by the legislative branch. It includes the president, vice president, and the cabinet. The cabinet’s role is to advise the president may require relating to the duties of each member's office. Most of the work done in the executive branch is done by federal agencies, departments, committees, and other groups.

The judicial branch interprets the laws. It is made of the supreme court and other federal courts. An interesting supreme court decision is the Regents of the University of California v. Bakke. In this decision, the issue was “can institutions of higher learning use race as a factor when making admission decisions?” The court replied to this with, “universities may use race as part of an admissions process so long as ‘fixed quotas’ are not used.” This means that as long as there are no determined ratios, the universities can use race when making admission decisions.

To make sure the power is divided evenly between the three branches, they built a system of checks and balances. By using this system, it ensures that no one branch becomes too powerful. First the legislative branch introduces and votes on a bill. The bill then goes to the executive branch where the president decides whether or not the bill is good for the country. If so, he signs the bill and it becomes a law.
