Three Types of High School Baseball Players

In my experience playing high school baseball there are three kinds of players that most people will find. It is a pretty tough to figure out which group you belong in most of the time until your later years of playing. I often had a hard time finding the category that I happened to fit in to until my junior year. Through the course of this writing, I hope that my past experiences will be able to help others find what crowd they fit in with. In my personal experiences, I have found that there are three types of high school baseball players: those who are average, those with tons of heart, and those who strive for the best.

Easily the most prominent type of high school baseball players are the average players.

With that being said, an average player is not necessarily a bad player they are typically just pretty good at everything. In my experience, the average players are the ones who go to practice every day, and they tend to just go through the motions and just try to get by. They will always get adamant playing time, but for the most part average players will rarely be able to move up to the collegiate level of play. Average players tend to be very easy to pick out from the rest on the baseball field. Average players have tendencies to have a lack in hustle, underperform at times when batting, and commit quite a few errors in the field. Due to the list above, average players can have a hard time standing out on the field to coaches and recruiters which often times cause them to lose hope, and their work ethic will falter. Average players are the most common, but the rarest players are often times the most loved. 

The rarest high school baseball player is going to be the one with tons of heart. The reason these kinds of players are so rare is because these players are going to give everything their all. Often times they will not be the best player, but they are admired for their hustle and on field energy. These players sheer energy will make other players better, and if another player is down on themselves, they will make sure to do what they can to get the other player’s head back in the game. The players with tons of heart no matter their skill level will nine out of ten times be the team captain. With that being said, they always have amazing leadership qualities which makes them a crucial part for a team because of their pure strive for the team to win. If a team has a player like this the team will always benefit because of the on field coaching these players are able to give, and they will always make sure other players are in check for the betterment of everybody. Players with tons of heart may serve their own purpose on the field as captains, but they are not normally the most fun to watch.

Last but definitely not least, are the aggressive high school baseball players.

Often, times people will confuse an aggressive player with the player who has tons of heart, but the key difference is their mindsets. The player with tons of heart wants what is best for the entire team, but most of the time the aggressive player is going to play for themselves. It is not always a bad thing that they play for themselves because the aggressive players are normally the best players on the team, but they often suffer from a lack of morale respect from their teammates. The biggest upside of the aggressive player is they are the definition of giving something one-hundred and ten percent. They will put everything they have into every play whether it is a diving play in the field or going to the plate and battling with the pitcher until they can get on base. These players will often always have recruiter and scouts looking at offering them a sports scholarship due to their electric style of play. All three are fun to watch, but the aggressive ones are the most fun to watch.

In conclusion, the three ways you can classify the different types of high school baseball players are: the average players, the players with tons of heart, and the aggressive players. I often found myself more with the average players, and I still fault myself to this day because of it. I always admired the ones with tons of heart, but I never had the sheer leadership abilities that they held. The main player I wanted to be was the aggressive player because I always loved their style of play and looked up to them, but in the end, I treated baseball like a hobby and not a dream and it held me back in the end. In the end I would strongly suggest all players to give it their all, and see what life gives you.
