Have you ever wondered what you could be capable of if wealth wasn't holding you back? I am a grade ten student thinking about my future and wondering if my family and I can afford university or college. Studies have shown fifty-five percent of Canadians cannot afford post secondary education. I highly believe that post-secondary options like university or college should be free of cost. This is suitable, I believe, because they are expensive, and if they were free, this would leave room for opportunities.

Many universities and colleges make you pay an upfront fee to get into a program. There are less fortunate people in the world who have negative income and can't afford a post-secondary option. Their families live paycheck to paycheck and do not have any money left over to send their kids to university or college. Their kids could be very intelligent but will never get to experience a stable academic career with a good wage. Nonetheless, much of humanity falls into a great amount of debt after college or university. They often have to pay it off later in life, affecting their financial outcome and taking a toll on their mental health. A study showed that people who are in debt are more prone to depression and other mental illnesses. Most people often think their lives are over! With post-secondary options being more affordable, this allows individuals to take advantage of opening opportunities.

In contrast, if university or college were free, it would provide you with more opportunities. Many individuals end up with a career they are not happy with or suited for. You’re paying money to get into school for a career you may not even like. This doesn't leave much room to find a career suitable for you, as if you drop out, universities and colleges keep your money. This leaves you full of regret as you have chosen the wrong path. Likewise, you would save tons of money if you didn't have to pay that upfront fee. Many students attending post-secondary options also have to tackle the cost of food, housing, school supplies and much more. Imagine if you had all that money to spend on something resourceful, like groceries or textbooks. Your opportunities would be endless.

On the contrary, I predict that if post-secondary options were free of cost, people's mental wellbeing would rise rapidly! Would your opportunities be endless if the cost of education wasn't holding you back from achieving great things? Therefore, the rise of mental illness because of the cost of post-secondary options is frequent. I believe that universities and colleges would benefit from being free of expense, offering students more opportunities.
