Technology has become a part of our daily lives, yet we do not realize its effects. We are all surrounded by technology. In our modern world, it is strenuous for us to avoid technology. Although technology has helped us, the excessive use of technology has created distinct sorts of a quandary among us. Technology has made it challenging for humans to develop intimate relationships with each other. The obsession with technical devices is very destructive for human beings because the overuse of technology makes us addicted, sickly, and less interactive.

Technology addiction is when someone is obsessed with technology. Every day, we use technology. According to an article, “[f]rom doing homework to reading the news to hanging out with friends, teenagers’ lives increasingly take place online” (Schwartz). If we need anything, we quickly search it up online instead of trying to do it by ourselves. Technology is a distraction for a lot of people. In accordance with “This Friendship Has Been Digitized,'' states that students are on a screen for almost 12 hours a day (Asma). Nowadays, the modern education system is all online to help the students prepare for the future. However, when we do online study, teachers, and students interact less with each other. “Each year, more and more of our lives take place in the digital space” (Asma). Too much screen time can affect us physically and mentally since artificial light can shorten the creation of sleeping hormones.

The use of smartphones is growing a gender gap, isolation, and as a consequence, people face depression and mental illnesses. When we spend a lot of time on our phones, we have less time for activities that can build self-confidence. Before, people would interact physically; but now everyone is playing online games, which is a lack of physical activities. Kids learn violence, and inappropriate things online, which is lessening their interest in the education system. “The days when the cafeteria, freshman orientation, and extracurriculars were the go-to places to meet pals are long gone” (Soo Hoo). We would go out, talk, eat and enjoy our time together before we became friends. In-person meet-ups are different from online meetings. ‘“But if you...This study doesn’t negate other research that links heavy social media use with depression”' (Reich qtd. in Schwartz). To put it differently, when people post stuff on social media, some of the viewers become distressed because they might be envious of the person’s activities. “[r]eal bonding is more biological than psychological and requires physical contact” (Asma). In other words, there is science behind bonding, and to fully bond, we need physical proximity. Technology is just not making us physically inactive, but it is also making us socially sluggish.

Due to technology, people are getting socially isolated. 90% of 18 to 29-year-olds are mostly on social media these days (Asma). Technology is taking us away from nature. Although social media is a place to make friends, we have to make sure if we are talking to a catfish. People are being stalked to see if they have similar interests as us. “Technology now being mobile, it weaves within your day. It’s not like television, where you sit down and watch TV and you’re kind of removed from other things” (Schwartz). As time passes, more people are dependent on the internet. All the teens these days use the internet a lot and get affected by the use. According to an article, ‘“A lot of social media platforms don’t give you a lot of text or space in which you could really articulate what your point is…”’ (Reich qtd. Schwartz). In other words, people misunderstand each other's thoughts virtually since we are not able to make physical eye contact. “Around 2005, people reported that the average number of their strong friendships had dropped from three to two. At the end of a 2006 study, close to 25 percent of respondents said they didn’t have anyone they could truly trust” (Asma). People are losing each other’s trust and are afraid to talk to each other in person. There are many pros and cons to technology. Controversially, in-person communication is better than online friendships.

Technology has become an important tool that we, as humans, cannot survive without. Although people think technology is our best friend, we do not acknowledge that technology is taking us far away from our destination. Technology changed the way we encounter one another. We have to decide whether to let technology be our helper or be the controller. As time passes, technology will be getting advanced, and we have to make clever decisions on how to use technology better because the usage of technology is compulsive, frail, and lastly, social alienation. The use of technology is not dreadful; however, using it too much can have detrimental consequences on our lives.
