Connie Willis, ' viewpoint is about the timelessness of literature and is favorable. From the quotation Passage, Willis states, “That's what literature is. It’s the people who went before us, tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave, trying to tell us about life and death! Listen to them!”. Literature is a way for authors from before this time to communicate with readers of the current time. We read their texts and learn lessons about life.

“FAKE” has the universal theme of do not pretend to be someone you are not. Donna Cooner shows that if you fake who you are, you will eventually be caught. Maisie pretends to be someone else online and when she gets caught everyone is mad at her because she tricked them. This book shows that even online you should be yourself because being someone else complicates things for everyone.

L. Frank Baum shows that home is one of a kind. “There is no place like home,” is the universal theme of “The Wonderful Wizard of OZ.”. Almost all readers can relate this to their own life. The main character is far from home and doesn’t feel as if she should be. Dorothy is alone and very vulnerable, being so far from home. Most readers can relate to being alone or vulnerable, which proves that this is a universal theme. Baum says that “People would rather live in homes regardless of its grayness. There is no place like home.” in his book “The Wonderful Wizard of OZ.”. The meaning behind this quote is that home is a place where we are comfortable, and it is one of a kind, nothing can replace one's home.

Shakespeare, “Romeo and Juliet,” shares the theme that love is more important than life. Romeo would rather die than live without Juliet, and Juliet would rather die than live with another man. They both sacrifice themselves in the name of love then live apart. Love is stronger than anything, even death. Romeo poisons himself after thinking Juliet was dead, and once Juliet found out she stabbed herself with a dagger. Both show willingness to die for their love.

Author's presents many topics from the past. Willis states, “That's what literature is. It’s the people who went before us, tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave, trying to tell us about life and death! Listen to them!”. Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of OZ”, and Cooner’s “FAKE” all show universal themes that are from the past but still have meaning today. They have connections from the past that give people of today information and concepts about life.
