You’re sitting on the couch, almost standing up from the excitement, 1 person left, you see them, you shoot your gun, as your enemy falls to the ground, you see the words ``Victory” display on the screen, jumping up from happiness. Can you relate to this situation? According to statistics, 58% of Americans can. Some people think video games make kids more violent, in this essay I will argue why violent video games have no negative effects on kids. My three reasons for this are because there is no concrete evidence violent games cause violence, there is evidence to show violent games relieve stress, and despite the stigma towards violent video games, they could build teamwork and strengthen bonds between people.

The idea that video games cause violence is straightforward. You shoot the avatars of people in the video games, you get rewarded by dopamine in your brain when you succeed or win, therefore you think shooting people is normal and become used to it,  consequently, those feelings translate to real life. “However, scientists analyzed data from 28 published studies, involving approximately 21,000 participants and found no noticeable link between video games and violence. Scientists looked into whether players who regularly enjoyed violent video games for more than three months became more aggressive. And while a minute effect of violent gameplay on aggression was found, it was just too small to state anything”- University of Tasmania. A lot of things make you a little aggressive from that traffic jam driving to an alarm clock jolting you awake.

There is no evidence that shows that playing video games is a cause of shootings. “When it comes to actual serious criminal violence, there's virtually no evidence that video games matter,” James Ivory, professor and research director at Virginia tech. “I think another reason we like to point to video games is that we don’t want to talk about other things that we know are much more likely to be relevant”- James Ivory. This is just another expert arguing against the myth that video games cause violence.

Despite the hate against violent video games, there is sufficient research that shows that violent video games can relieve and increase your tolerance of stress. “In this study, 103 young adults were given a frustration task and then randomized to play no game, a non-violent game, a violent game with a good versus evil theme, or a violent game in which they played ‘the bad guy.’ The results suggest that violent games reduce depression and hostile feelings in players through mood management,” Dr. Ferguson explained.

In addition to the evidence showing violent video games are stress relieving, they also can build teamwork. During the pandemic when a lot of people were trapped in their homes, with sports shut down, it looked pretty gloomy for social interaction. People turned to video games for their social interaction. Similar to sports, people could play with their friends without the risk of getting sick. There is evidence to prove that violent video games strengthen teamwork and bonds between people. "Team video gaming may truly be a viable — and perhaps even optimal — alternative for team building," said Mark Keith, associate professor at BYU. Video games are important for connecting people across the world, with friends who moved away, and people you never would have met if not for the game!

Violent video games are not bad and have no negative effects on kids. It is crucial for kids to socialize and relieve their stress through video games. If we keep letting the argument that video games are bad for children to expand. Kids will not be happy with one of the most popular activities gone. Would you be able to live in a world where people cannot connect with friends and strangers across the globe with a couple of clicks of a mouse?
