Spider-Man is a movie about a teenage boy in high school named Peter Parker. He gets bitten by a radioactive spider while on a field trip to a science lab and is given extraordinary powers. The movie was directed and produced by Sam Raimi in 2002. It is clear that Peter is given tremendous responsibilities which relays to our everyday lives. From the beginning of the movie, it is very clear that everyone has responsibilities and as we get older and gain more power, we also gain more responsibilities.

In Spider-Man when Peter gets bitten by the spider, he gains the abilities of super strength, spider webs coming out of his wrists, and to cling to any surface like a spider. Peter begins his fight against crime trying to find justice for his Uncle Ben. Uncle Ben was Peter’s father figure for the majority of his life. Peter lost his parents at a very young age and his Aunt May and Uncle Ben took him in. Furthermore, Peter was very close with his aunt and uncle. As Peter was growing up there was a girl that lived next door named Mary Jane Watson, aka MJ. The day that MJ had moved in next door to him he had immediately fallen in love. As he got older his love for MJ had only gotten stronger. Later on in the movie, Peter wanted to impress MJ and decides to do it by purchasing a car. He entered a boxing match to win three thousand dollars to get money for the car. Uncle Ben had dropped him off and was going to pick him up later that night. Before dropping him off he had told Peter a few words since he had been acting odd lately. One thing that Uncle Ben had said to Peter that stuck with him was “with great power, comes great responsibility”. After Peter had finished the boxing match a robber had robbed the boxing managers. Peter let the robber go because the managers didn’t pay Peter what he was supposed to receive. The robber Peter let go had killed Peter’s uncle so he could steal his car to flee from the scene. Ever since Uncle Ben’s death Peter has lived by one of the last things his uncle said to him before passing, “with great power, comes great responsibility”. During Peters crime fighting journey he encounters a villain that goes by the name Green Goblin. The Green Goblin shows Peter how his powers come with responsibilities.

Throughout the entire movie it displays how we must be careful and responsible with the people that we are surrounded by and how our choices can affect them. One choice someone makes could cause another’s failure or put them in a tough position. Peter kept Uncle Ben’s words in mind throughout the entire film and used them to drive him and keep him strong on his crime fighting journey. Peter shows how he has become more responsible through how he acts and carries himself. For example, when the Green Goblin found out who Spider-Man really was he had taken MJ and a cart full of children and thrown them off a bridge making Spider-Man have to pick between the two of whom he would save, but Spider-Man found a way to save them both at the same time. This demonstrates how Peter is responsible because he did everything he could to keep both MJ and the children safe. He learns that there are moments when he will have to make these tough decisions, and he will be responsible for what he chooses and how it affects those around him. When he made the choice to continue being Spider-Man even after it had caused problems in his own personal relationships, he had shown us how he was now responsible enough to do both protect his loved ones and be a superhero. An example of this is at the end of the film when MJ confesses his love for him, and he couldn’t be with her romantically but only remain friends with her. If he were to be with her romantically, he would be putting her in harm’s way by letting others know he deeply cared for her. Just after Peter had told MJ he couldn’t be with her he said, “No matter what I do, no matter how hard I try, the ones I love will always be the ones who pay”. This represents how he thought he must keep the amount of people he loves to a few, so that there are less people to be hurt because of him. He feels as if he won’t be able to make the right decisions or even control what happens to the people around him. Over time he learned what he needed to do in order to create new relationships without causing any harm to them. This demonstrates how one doesn’t need to shorten the number of loved ones around them but learn what they must do to keep them safe.

In conclusion, Spider-Man shows a lot about how with great power, comes great responsibility. As one gets older, they won’t always be told this by people and may tend to forget how they affect others in so many ways. This movie does a great job of displaying how we can improve and take things away and apply them to our own lives. Nowadays we don’t typically see things on social media and the news regarding advice like this. Most things we watch or look at tell us not to care for others and to disregard their feelings. When one cares for another’s feelings it shows us how they are responsible because they not only want to make themselves feel cared for but other people too. Spider-Man does this by displaying a hero that has to consider more than just his own feelings. The audience should most definitely take away the knowledge and advice that comes with this film in that the power they receive comes with great responsibility.
