Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Patillo Beals Analysis Essay

Many people believed that their words didn’t affect African-Americans but when it is taken to conclusion, it's exactly the opposite. Hopelessness and self-determination are all considered in Warriors Don’t Cry. In her autobiography, “Warriors Don’t Cry” Melba Patillo Beals makes known that faith, independence, and discouragement are crucial characteristics to fight for freedom and equality in 1957.  Faith is the most important detail.

Beals illustrates Faith to fight for freedom and equality. Beals delineates her belief while attending Central-High, Beals hopes that things will solve themselves “maybe things will work out. Please God” (153). Beals has determination and a desire to pray to god for things to get better. She feels hopeless that she had to enter a segregated school and having no one to help her go through it, “There seems to be no space for me at Central High… Please god, make space for me” (86). During the school year, Beals loses some of her innocence but gains some independence.

Beals throughout her school year has to gain a change of attitude to live through the experience. In addition, Beals relies upon her Independence to feel strong during tough situations at Central high. Beals steps on a white person's foot, “Ooooooops, I said as I stepped on his foot” (140). It makes her gain reliance at Central High. This is a crucial aspect that she had to achieve to make them feel conformity, “I had a powerful feeling of being in charge” (181). Even though Beals gained Independence the outcomes demoralized Beals. 

In Warriors Don’t Cry Beals reveals discouragement through her thoughts and diary entries. Melba is affected because her neighbors do not talk to her, “I didn’t do anything to them” (34). She is very fixated on being able to see another day while attending Central-High. Beals reveals some of the time it made her think of taking her own life, “I do wish I were dead” (160). Beals went through a depressing time during the school year. 

All in all, the hatred of Warriors Don’t Cry is quite upsetting, to say the least. The whites discouraged and belittled the little rock nine to get them away. The point of this story is to take account of others. Melba Patillo recognized several characteristics while attending Central high such as discouragement, independence, and faith in God. Overall, Beals is a warrior, champion, and conqueror.
