Warriors: Power of Three Book Report

Jaykit, Lionkit, and Hollykit are three kittens born into a world where cats are divided by clans and they are dying to become warriors in their clan. The clan they are born into is called Thunderclan and the leader of the clan is Firestar (who is also their grandpa.) The author of this book is Erin Hunter and the year it was published is 2007.  Will the little kittens become great warriors, what is the secret about Jaykit, and what is the prophecy about these three kittens? Keep reading to find out.

Before I start with the book, you should know the setting of the story.  There are four clans: Thunderclan, Shadowclan, Windclan, and Riverclan (Thunderclan is the main clan in the story.) All clans live around one lake and a few humans live there too but they aren't mentioned in the story much.

The story starts with Firestar having a dream of three cats “kin of his kin who will hold the power of the stars in their hands.” Years after the dream Jaykit, Lionkit, and Hollykit were born and they are now almost 6 months old. Hollykit and Lionkit are fine but Jaykit was born blind and weak.  After a patrol comes back from inspecting the area and reports a dead fox on Thunderclan's land and that there may be fox cubs on their land too the three kittens want to help find and kill them. Kittens usually aren’t allowed to leave the camp but they snuck out searching for the fox den.  After finding the den and discovering the other foxes aren’t babies they escape, Jaykit (being blind) fell into a hole but luckily it was the medicine cat’s den and he was rescued but required time to heal.

Hollykit decided to visit Jaykit in the medicine den, and after seeing how the medicine cat, Leafpool, treated cats and the knowledge she had she decided she wanted to become a medicine cat.  That same night Lionkit snuck out of the nursery and (while trying to hide because he wasn’t supposed to be out there) he picked up some thorns on his fur. Hollykit got him some herbs and only became more in love with herbs and being a medicine cat.  Eventually, Hollykit gathered the courage to tell Leafpool that she wanted to become her apprentice. Today was naming day for these kittens and each kit received its apprentice name. Hollykit became Hollypaw and her mentor was Leafpool. Lionkit became Lionpaw and his mentor was Ashfur. And finally, Jaykit became Jaypaw and his mentor was Brightheart (a one-eyed cat.)

Jaykit was very mad that his mentor was a one-eyed cat. He felt like they were treating him like a second-level apprentice since he was blind. All new apprentices went on with their first-day tasks.  Hollypaw and Lionpaw explored the forest with their mentors while Jaypaw cleaned the elders' den, making him feel like he was being mistreated again.  After cleaning the den he finally went out to the forest with Brightheart, but when they were heading back they encountered the same foxes from the beginning of the story. After failing to defeat the foxes a patrol came and fought them off and everyone went home.

After all that happened Jaypaw wanted to prove himself to his mentor and decided to try heading to the lake by himself early in the morning. Nothing too bad happened to him (other than a few trips and falls) until he was able to hear the lake.  After thinking he was finally going to complete the challenge he suddenly started falling. After plunging into deep waters and about to drown Jaypaw felt a paw pulling him out of the water. He got pulled onto land and discovered that he had wandered onto Windclan territory. They took him back to his camp and he was banned from leaving the camp or until further notice.

Jaypaw was busy with his boring apprentice duties when he heard Leafpool say she was going to the Moonpool (a place where medicine cats go to talk with Starclan (cat gods) and ask them about what to do in certain situations.) Being the naughty kit that he is, Jaypaw decided to go with Leafpool without her knowing.

After getting there and sleeping (because that’s what they do to talk with Starclan in their dreams) Jaypaw was watching himself and Leafpool from outside his body. After Leafpool woke up and saw him and he told her what he saw, Leafpool almost had a heart attack!  What happened may not sound like much, but this means he was destined to be a medicine cat! Even Leafpool who is a medicine cat can't do what he did (entering other people's dreams.)

Days passed and eventually Jaypaw gathered the courage to tell Firestar that he wanted to become a medicine cat.  As he was going into his den he saw Hollypaw coming out and apparently she had just told him she wanted to be a warrior too, what a coincidence! After telling him Firestar agreed and he was now officially a medicine cat apprentice. Fast forward a few weeks it is now winter and white cough (an illness) has spread between the clans and the herb they need to fight this illness has all frozen because of the cold. After a few days Leafpool got some herbs from Riverclan and all the cats were cured.
