Cairo is expected to face a very critical water shortage by 2025. Cairo is the capital of Egypt, and all around Egypt is experiencing water scarcity for many reasons. One reason that Cairo is experiencing a water shortage is because of how much the population is growing, and how quickly. Because of this, the population is expected to double over the next 50 years. This causes more water to be used, and they are running out of it. Another reason that Cario is experiencing this intense water shortage is that they have very poor plumbing and sewage systems. Because they have such more plumbing, this causes the water to get polluted.

One really large problem that effecting Cairo to lose water so quickly is because of its population. In Egypt’s Water Crisis – Recipe for Disaster it states “ Egypt’s population is mushrooming at an alarming rate and has increased by 41 percent since the early 1990s.”( Amir Dakkak Population Explosion) This expert from this article is talking about how the population is increasing at such a rapid and fast pace. Because of this large population growth, this puts lots of stress on Egypt’s water supply. Because they are losing lots of water/ not having enough water in the very first place. Another problem that Cairo has lots of water pollution from industrial waste. In 10 Facts About the Struggle to End the Water Crisis in Egypt it says “ Polluted water is being distributed to citizens.”( Maria Rodriguez 5) This piece of evidence shows that polluted water is being given to the people of Cairo so most of them are drinking unsafe water. This leads to lots of health problems for many things. Also in Egypt’s Water Crisis – Recipe for Disaster Amir Dakkak says” Industrial waste has led to the presence of metals in the water...” This is just talking about how industries are dumping waste into the water without any concerns for the people or the animals of Cairo and Egypt. The water is polluted however also because of very poor plumbing, and sewage.

The population affects the health of the water because the more people there is the more water that they have to use for other things. The more people there are the more reason to use water. In Egypt’s Water Crisis – Recipe for Disaster by Amir Dakkak, they say “The rapid population increase multiplies the stress on Egypt’s water supply due to more water requirements for domestic consumption...” This piece from the text means that the more people there is the more water that is being used. This also goes into talking about how people dont have enough water to grow crops. That is another really big thing that is being affected because Cairo doesn’t have enough water to grow crops, which means they can run out of food. In Water crisis builds in Egypt as dam talks falter, temperatures rise it says “ More than 80% of its water is used for agriculture, but scarcity means Cairo already imports about half its food and is the world’s largest wheat importer.”(Nadeen Ebrahim)This is explaining how Cario is already using a majority of their water for growing crops, and they dont have enough for factories, or even just drinking water.

Now another reason that water is so scarce is that it just isn’t clean enough to drink. Factories are dumping very dangerous metals and resources into the drinking water. Because of this, it isn’t safe to drink, and yet it is still being given to the people. In Egypt’s Water Crisis – Recipe for Disaster by Amir Dakkak, another great point that they say is “Industrial waste has led to the presence of metals in the water which pose a significant risk not only on human health, but also on animal health and agricultural production.” This is saying how waste from the factories around Egypt is dumping their chemicals and metals into the Nile river causing them to have toxic materials in the water. Even though this is happening unclean water is still being distributed to the people of Egypt. This is extremely unsafe and can cause health problems. However, it can not only cause effects for the human but also the animals. A large number of fish can be killed by the poison which also goes back to Egypt not having enough food. However having enough water for factories growing crops, or just for drinking isn’t the only problem. There have been lots of crimes and deaths that have gone up too. In 10 FACTS ABOUT THE STRUGGLE TO END THE WATER CRISIS IN EGYPT it says “ In desperation for water, people have succumbed to illegally digging for water sources in their backyards. Due to the illegality of such digging, the water is not treated, leaving people to drink water infused with high amounts of magnesium, iron, and sodium. This water has been the cause of 13 percent of all child deaths in the country.” This piece means that people are digging water to have safe drinking water but it is still very unsafe. People are digging the water and are causing, kids, to die from illnesses from the water. This is a very large effect of water scarcity.

These are just a few reasons why Cairo is experiencing such large amounts of water scarcity. They have such a large population and it's still growing. They also have such poor plumbing causing the water to be polluted too. They are running out of water because the more people the more water is needed. Also, they are in famine because they dont have enough water to grow crops even though they are using a majority of their water on that. Kids are even dying because of this. Just think they are expected to have more than 50% of their population in the next 50 years and expected to almost have all of their water gone by 2025. This can cause the entire place of Egypt to disappear.
